Chapter 12 - The Dead Child’s NameThe death certificate stated that Anna Margaret Whitmore died at age nine from complications of adrenal failure.

The date matched the night Margaret was taken away.

Anna remembered waking in a hospital afterward, confused and weak. Henry told her she had suffered a severe medical crisis and that her mother died during the same week.

No one discussed the details.

Grace claimed the child who died was not Anna.

It was Rebecca.

According to the hidden record, Henry moved the surviving twin into Anna’s public identity because Anna was the named company heir.

Rebecca had always believed she was the abandoned twin.

But Grace’s evidence suggested Rebecca was the original Anna.

The woman raised publicly as Anna might have been Rebecca.

Both women stared at each other.

Identical genetics could not resolve which name belonged to which child.

Childhood photographs provided no certainty.

Medical files had been duplicated.

Dental records had been altered under Henry’s protocol.

Margaret became frantic.

“I knew my daughters.”

“Which child died?” Anna asked.

“Neither. Richard told me one had been moved for treatment.”

“Then why is there a death certificate?”

“I don’t know.”

Grace appeared again through a secure video connection.

“Henry created the certificate to stop Richard from claiming both girls.”

“Which one am I?” Anna demanded.

“You are the daughter Henry chose to raise.”

“That is not an answer.”

“No. It is the only fact he preserved.”

The trust required a verified sibling, not specific birth order, but company ownership depended on the identity of the daughter named Anna.

Jason had learned about the death certificate during the audit.

If Anna’s legal identity collapsed, her voting authority could be suspended immediately.

That offered a faster path than waiting for death.

“Then why lock me inside?” Anna asked.

Grace answered coldly.

“Because he needed a body matching Anna Whitmore’s DNA.”

Jason intended for the public Anna to die.

Rebecca would then appear as the surviving twin and testify that the dead woman had stolen her identity.

The court would transfer control while debating which twin was truly Anna.

Jason would manage both sides through spousal authority and Rebecca’s medication.

It was not simply murder for inheritance.

It was murder designed to create permanent identity confusion.

Detective Laura authenticated the death certificate’s paper and seal.

The signature belonged to Dr. Samuel Reed, the physician who treated Margaret and the twins.

Samuel was also Detective Laura’s father.

Laura stared at the document.

“My father died twelve years ago.”

Grace’s expression did not change.

“He worked for Richard before he tried to leave.”

Laura had believed her father was a respected rural physician. Now his signature appeared throughout Whitmore medical files.

The case had entered her own family.

She immediately notified an independent supervisor and surrendered direct evidence control to avoid a conflict.

Anna watched her place her badge on the table.

“You saved my life.”

“And my father may have helped create the identity that almost killed you.”

Grace sent one final file.

It was a recent hospital photograph.

Samuel Reed was alive.
