PART 1
“He shoved his pregnant wife off a frozen cliff for a $50 million payout… then the rescue helicopter heard everything.”
Emma Caldwell did not remember falling.
She remembered Michael’s hand.
That was worse.
She remembered the pressure between her shoulder blades.
The sudden empty air.
The white wall of snow rushing upward.
The sound she made when the frozen cliff vanished beneath her boots.
Then nothing.
Then pain.
Then the impossible weight of her own body against icy rocks.
When she opened her eyes, the blizzard was still screaming.
Snow whipped across her face.
Blood stained the front of her white winter coat.
Her nine-month pregnant belly rose beneath her trembling hand.
For one terrifying second, she could not feel him.
Her son.
Her baby.
Then a faint movement pressed against her palm.
Small.
Weak.
Alive.
Emma sobbed into the storm.
Above her, on the ridge, two shadows moved inside the helicopter searchlight.
Michael.
Her husband.
And Ashley.
His mistress.
Ashley’s blonde hair whipped around her fur-lined hood.
Michael stood beside her in a dark winter coat, looking down at Emma as if the mountain had failed him.
The rescue helicopter roared overhead, searchlight cutting through the snow.
A rope dropped.
A rescuer descended into the white darkness and landed hard on the ledge near Emma.
He was in black alpine gear, calm even as the storm tried to tear his body sideways.
He knelt beside her and gripped her face gently.
“Ma’am, can you hear me?”
Emma forced her eyes open.
Her lips were numb.
Her voice came out broken.
“He pushed me…”
The rescuer froze.
Emma clutched her belly.
“Please save my baby.”
Above them, Michael shouted into the wind.
“She’s lying!”
Ashley grabbed his arm.
Her face was no longer smug.
It was terrified.
“Michael, we need to leave!”
The rescuer looked up toward the ridge.
His expression changed.
Not shocked.
Certain.
The helicopter shifted above them, its searchlight locking onto Michael and Ashley like a courtroom spotlight from the sky.
The rescuer’s voice cut through the storm.
“The helicopter recorded your confession.”
Michael stopped moving.
Ashley’s face collapsed.
Emma grabbed the rescuer’s sleeve with the last strength she had.
“My son is still alive.”
The rescuer wrapped a thermal blanket around her and signaled the crew.
Michael stood frozen above them, exposed under the light.
He had chosen the mountain because he thought snow buried everything.
But the storm had not hidden Emma.
May you like
It had carried his voice straight into the rescue recording.
