part 4

PART 4
The fall did not kill Emma because the cliff had shelves.
That was what the rescuer told her later.
A straight drop would have ended everything.
Instead, her body struck a snow-packed ledge, rolled, and slammed into icy rocks twenty feet below the main ridge.
Her shoulder dislocated.
Two ribs cracked.
Her forehead split near the hairline.
The pain came in waves so large she could not separate one injury from another.
But the baby moved.
That was the only fact that mattered.
She tried to scream.
The storm swallowed it.
She tried to stand.
Her legs would not obey.
Above her, Michael and Ashley argued.
The wind carried pieces of their voices.
“She’s still moving,” Ashley shouted.
Michael answered, “Then go.”
“We need to leave now.”
“We can’t.”
“You said she’d be gone.”
Emma lay against the rocks and understood the full shape of the betrayal.
Not accident.
Not panic.
Not sudden rage.
Plan.
She fumbled for her coat pocket.
Her phone was gone.
Michael had taken it at the overlook, saying her hands were shaking and he would hold it for her.
But he had not checked her watch.
Her father had given her the satellite emergency watch after she got pregnant.
“For hikes,” he said.
“For storms.”
“For the day you think needing help is embarrassing.”
She had laughed.
Now, with numb fingers, she pressed the emergency button once.
Then again.
Then held it until a tiny red light blinked beneath the cracked face.
Somewhere beyond the blizzard, a signal went out.
Michael did not know.
Ashley did not know.
The mountain knew.
Ten minutes later, the distant thump of rotor blades entered the storm.
Michael heard it first.
Emma saw him look upward.
Panic changed his body.
He grabbed Ashley.
“Say she slipped.”
Ashley shook her head.
“You pushed her.”
“Shut up.”
“You pushed your pregnant wife.”
“She was going to ruin everything.”
The helicopter came closer.
Its camera was already recording.
Its external audio system, designed for rescue communication in heavy weather, captured their voices through the ridge microphones as the pilot circled.
Michael shouted, “I didn’t push her for nothing.”
Ashley screamed back, “For the payout?”
The searchlight struck them both.

That was the moment the mountain stopped being their hiding place.
