PART 6

Michael ran anyway.

Cowards often do after pretending to be powerful.

He turned toward the tree line and lunged through knee-deep snow.

Ashley screamed his name, but he did not look back.

That told Emma something she would never forget.

He had killed her in his mind already.

Now he was abandoning Ashley too.

The ridge ranger tackled Michael near a twisted pine.

Both men went down hard.

Snow exploded around them.

Michael fought once, then stopped when the ranger pinned his arm behind his back.

The helicopter searchlight held him there.

Bright.

Exposed.

Small.

Ashley stood alone near the cliff, shaking so violently the ranger ordered her to sit before she slipped.

She obeyed.

All her smugness had vanished into the blizzard.

Down on the ledge, Caleb and the second rescuer prepared Emma for lift.

Every movement hurt.

The spine board.

The straps.

The thermal wrap.

The collar.

Emma tried not to scream, but one sound escaped when they stabilized her shoulder.

Caleb leaned close.

“I know.”

“I’m sorry.”

“He pushed me,” she whispered again.

“I know.”

“He wanted the money.”

Caleb’s eyes flicked toward her.

“What money?”

“The policy.”

“Fifty million.”

His jaw tightened.

“Say that again when we’re recording in the aircraft.”

“I can say it now.”

“You can.”

He paused.

“But you don’t have to spend all your strength proving what we already heard.”

That sentence loosened something in her chest.

She had spent months feeling like she would need perfect proof.

Perfect timing.

Perfect tone.

Perfect calm.

Perfect victimhood.

Now a stranger in rescue gear was telling her the truth did not require her to bleed more in order to be real.

They lifted her into the harness.

The helicopter cable tightened.

Snow spun around her face.

Emma looked upward.

For one second, she saw Michael being dragged upright in handcuffs on the ridge.

He looked down at her.

Not with love.

Not with regret.

With disbelief.

As if she had betrayed him by surviving.

Emma held her belly.

Her voice was barely audible beneath the rotor blades.

“You don’t get my son.”

Caleb heard her.

He smiled once.

A fierce, brief smile.

“No, ma’am.”

“He doesn’t.”

The cable lifted.

Emma rose from the frozen ledge into the searchlight.

Below her, the cliff disappeared into white darkness.
