part 8

PART 8
Emma woke to the sound of beeping.
Not the helicopter.
Not the storm.
Hospital monitors.
Her mouth was dry.
Her body felt broken in more places than she could count.
For one terrible second, she did not know whether she was still pregnant.
Then she saw Dr. Patel standing at the foot of the bed.
Emma tried to speak.
No sound came.
Dr. Patel moved closer.
“Emma.”
Her eyes filled before she asked.
“My baby?”
Dr. Patel’s face softened.
“Your son is alive.”
Emma began to sob without sound.
“He was delivered by emergency C-section.”
“He is premature in distress from the trauma, but he is breathing with support.”
Emma closed her eyes.
Alive.
The word became the whole room.
“Can I see him?”
“Soon.”
“He’s in the NICU.”
Emma nodded, tears sliding into her hair.
“What’s his name?”
The question pierced through everything.
Michael had wanted to name him after himself.
Michael Jr.
A legacy.
A claim.
Emma looked toward the window, where early morning light had begun to erase the storm from the sky.
“Samuel.”
Dr. Patel smiled.
“Samuel.”
“My father’s name.”
“That’s a strong name.”
Emma nodded weakly.
“It belonged to a good man.”
Later, Officer Ruiz from the National Park investigation team came to her room with a federal agent and a victim advocate.
They played only enough of the helicopter recording for confirmation.
Michael’s voice came through the speaker.
“She was going to ruin everything.”
Ashley’s voice.
“For the payout?”
Then Michael again.
“She should have signed.”
Emma turned her face away.
Not because she was surprised.
Because hearing his voice alive inside a machine made the cliff real again.
The agent stopped the recording.
“That is enough for now.”
Emma whispered, “Did Ashley help?”
The agent looked at the advocate, then back at Emma.
“She admits she knew about the insurance.”
“She claims she did not know he intended to push you.”
Emma stared at the ceiling.
“She came to the cliff.”
“Yes.”
“She watched.”
“Yes.”
“Then she knew enough.”
The agent did not argue.
Emma looked at him.
“My son gets nothing through Michael.”
“We’ll connect you with estate counsel.”
She closed her eyes.
The fight was not over.
Survival had only moved it indoors.
But Samuel was alive.
Michael was in custody.
The recording existed.
