PART 5
The rescuer’s name was Caleb Ross.
Emma learned it in the helicopter.
At first, he was only a voice.
Calm.
Firm.
Close.
“Emma, stay with me.”
“Keep your hand on your belly.”
“Do you feel movement?”
She nodded because speaking took too much air.
Caleb checked her pulse, her pupils, her breathing, then radioed upward.
“Pregnant female, severe trauma, conscious, reporting assault by husband.”
The word assault cut through the storm.
Michael heard it from the ridge.
“She’s lying!”
Caleb did not look impressed.
He shouted upward, “Sir, step away from the edge.”
Michael pointed down.
“She slipped.”
Caleb looked at Emma’s shoulder.
The bruise on her back.
The angle of her fall path.
The ridge above.
Then he looked at Michael.
“No, she didn’t.”
Ashley backed away from Michael.
Her fur coat was white with snow now.
She looked less like a mistress and more like a woman realizing a fantasy had turned criminal.
“Michael, we need to leave.”
Caleb turned toward the helicopter and made a hand signal.
A second rescuer descended with a medical bag.
The searchlight widened to include Michael and Ashley.
The pilot’s voice came through Caleb’s headset.
“Ridge subjects recorded.”
Caleb’s eyes hardened.
He looked up.
“The helicopter recorded your confession.”
Michael froze.
The wind seemed to pause around him.
Ashley’s mouth opened.
Emma felt Caleb’s gloved hand on her shoulder.
“Emma, listen to me.”
“We’re going to move you carefully.”
“The baby’s our priority too.”
Emma gripped his sleeve.
“My son is still alive.”
Caleb’s face softened for the first time.
“Then we’re going to keep him that way.”
The second rescuer placed a fetal monitor pad against Emma’s belly beneath the thermal blanket.
The sound came faintly through the equipment.
Fast.
Tiny.
There.
A heartbeat.
Emma sobbed.
Not from pain.
From proof.
The baby was still fighting with her.
Caleb looked toward the helicopter.
“We have fetal activity.”
“Prepare immediate airlift.”
Above them, Michael took one step backward.
A ranger on the ridge emerged through the blowing snow with a sidearm visible and one hand raised.
“Do not move.”
Ashley lifted both hands immediately.
Michael looked toward the trees.
Then at Emma.
Then at the helicopter.

For the first time, he realized there was nowhere left to run.
