part 2

PART 2
Michael had planned the trip for three weeks.
That was what Emma remembered later.
Not the fall.
The planning.
The way he suddenly became tender.
The way he touched her belly again after months of distance.
The way he told everyone they needed “one last peaceful weekend” before the baby came.
He booked a luxury cabin near Rocky Mountain National Park.
He packed her white winter coat.
He bought her new insulated boots.
He even placed the baby’s tiny blue hat in the suitcase and said, “For luck.”
Emma had cried.
She thought grief had made her suspicious.
She thought pregnancy hormones had made her lonely.
She thought maybe the man she married was finally coming back.
That was the cruelest part of being betrayed.
Sometimes the trap looks exactly like the love you missed.
Michael had changed after her father died.
Not immediately.
At first, he was perfect.
He held her through the funeral.
Handled calls.
Managed legal appointments.
Sat beside her when the Caldwell estate lawyer explained the insurance trusts and inheritance structure.
Emma inherited her father’s controlling shares in Caldwell Energy Holdings.
But a separate life policy had been updated after her pregnancy.
Fifty million dollars.
Payable to her surviving spouse if she died before the child was born.
If the baby survived, the payout would be restricted into a child trust.
If both mother and unborn child died, Michael would control everything.
Emma had not worried then.
Because only monsters hear estate terms and begin calculating.
Michael heard them.
Ashley helped him understand them.
Ashley was not supposed to be at the cabin.
She was supposed to be in Denver.
At least, that was what Michael told Emma.
But on the second night, Emma woke and saw a text flash across his phone.
Do it before she changes the beneficiary.
A.
Emma’s blood went cold.
She asked him who A was.
He smiled too fast.
“Auto reminder.”
She wanted to believe him.
Again.
By morning, he insisted they drive to the overlook.
“You need fresh air.”
“You’ve been anxious.”
“The view will calm you.”
The trail was officially closed for weather.
Michael said he knew a safer path.
Ashley was already waiting near the ridge when they arrived.
That was when Emma understood.
Not everything.
Enough.
She stepped backward.
Michael reached for her hand.
“Don’t be dramatic.”
Emma looked at Ashley.
Ashley did not look away.
Emma whispered, “What did you do?”
Michael’s face went empty.
May you like
Then his hand moved.
