PART 2

Evan stood up too fast.

The visitor chair scraped across the hospital floor.

“What is this?”

No one answered him.

Serena kept her eyes closed because Simon had told her to.

She trusted that voice more than the room.

More than the doctors.

More than the husband who had smiled while her throat bruised beneath his hands.

Baby Owen stirred softly against her chest.

She kissed the top of his wrapped head and whispered, “It’s okay.”

She did not know if she was speaking to him or herself.

Douglas gripped the edge of the metal basin.

His face had gone gray.

Not pale.

Gray.

Like his body had remembered something his mouth had spent decades burying.

Simon’s forearm remained visible.

The tattoo was old.

The ink had blurred with age.

But the shape was unmistakable.

A dagger driven down through a cracked crown.

Evan looked from his father to Simon.

“Dad?”

Douglas tried to straighten.

Failed.

“What are you doing here?”

Simon’s voice was low.

“My niece gave birth.”

Douglas swallowed.

“You’re dead.”

Evan blinked.

“What?”

Simon tilted his head.

“No.”

“You just built your life hoping I was.”

Serena opened her eyes.

Her uncle had always spoken softly.

He fed stray cats.

He mailed birthday cards early.

He cried at old war movies and denied it.

But the man standing beside her bed did not feel old.

He felt hidden.

Like a locked room inside a house everyone thought they knew.

Evan pointed toward Simon.

“You need to leave.”

Simon did not look at him.

He looked at the bruises on Serena’s neck.

“Did he do that?”

Serena’s mouth trembled.

Evan stepped forward.

“She was panicking.”

“She scratched me.”

“She tried to hit me with the baby in her arms.”

Simon turned his head slowly.

“You touched her while she was holding a newborn?”

Evan’s throat moved.

Douglas suddenly snapped back into control.

“Enough.”

His voice was sharp now.

“This is a family matter.”

Simon looked at him.

“That sentence has hidden more crimes than any weapon I ever saw.”

Douglas’s eyes darted toward the door.

Simon noticed.

So did Serena.

For the first time since the delivery, she felt the balance shift.

The Harrows were no longer deciding what the room meant.

Someone else had entered with a truth older than their money.

A nurse appeared at the doorway.

She saw Serena’s neck.

Then Simon’s posture.

Then Douglas’s face.

“Is everything all right?”

Evan answered quickly.

“Yes.”

Simon answered over him.

“No.”

The nurse stepped inside.

Simon pointed to Serena’s bruises.

“Call hospital security.”

“And call the police.”

Evan laughed once.

“You don’t get to order people around.”

Simon looked at him for the first time.

“No.”

“But the law does.”

Douglas whispered, almost to himself, “Broken Crown.”

Simon’s eyes returned to him.

“So you do remember.”

Douglas’s knees bent slightly.

He caught himself against the basin.

Serena stared at her uncle.

“Uncle Simon…”

His face softened only when he looked at her.

“Not now, sweetheart.”

“Just hold Owen.”

Then he turned back to Douglas.

May you like

“You and I are going to finish what you ran from.”
