part 7

PART 7
Evan tried to run the moment Douglas collapsed.
It was not dramatic.
Not brave.
Not even clever.
He simply stepped backward, eyes fixed on the door, thinking everyone was too busy watching his father retch into a basin.
Serena saw it first.
Maybe because she had spent years learning how Evan moved before he struck.
“Uncle Simon,” she whispered.
Simon turned his head.
Evan bolted.
The security officer caught him at the doorway.
Evan fought once.
Only once.
Then Detective Bennett’s voice cut through the room.
“Stop.”
Something about her tone ended the struggle.
Evan froze.
His face turned ugly.
“You can’t keep me here.”
Detective Bennett stepped toward him.
“No.”
“But I can arrest you.”
Evan looked at Serena.
His eyes were full of hatred now.
“You did this.”
Serena held Owen closer.
“No.”
“You did.”
The words were quiet.
They landed anyway.
Dr. Morris stood beside Serena like a wall.
Simon stood between the bed and the Harrows.
Douglas wiped his mouth with a shaking hand.
He was still staring at the tattoo.
Like the past had crawled out of an old grave and entered a maternity ward.
Detective Bennett read Evan his rights on suspicion of domestic assault, coercion, and attempted financial exploitation.
Evan kept saying, “This is insane.”
The handcuffs clicked.
That sound made Serena close her eyes.
Not because she was afraid.
Because relief sometimes feels like the body finally letting go of a rope it has held too long.
Owen stirred and made a small sound.
Serena kissed his forehead.
“You’re safe.”
Simon heard her.
His face changed.
Softened.
For a moment, he was Uncle Simon again.
Then Douglas spoke.
“You don’t know what you’re opening.”
Detective Bennett turned to him.
“I know enough.”
Douglas pointed at Simon.
“He was unstable.”
“He was discharged.”
“He made accusations for decades.”
Simon nodded.
“I was discharged.”
His voice was calm.
“After men with money needed me discredited.”
Detective Bennett took one step closer to Douglas.
“My father died with your name in his notes.”
Douglas looked at the door.
Two officers moved into place.
He understood.
The room had closed around him.
Not with violence.
With witnesses.
Evidence.
Memory.
Women who were no longer silent.
A baby who would grow up hearing the truth instead of the Harrow version.
Serena looked at Douglas.
“You told Evan I was weak.”
Douglas’s expression hardened.
“You were.”
Simon turned fully toward him.
“No.”
“She was surrounded.”
The sentence made Serena cry again.
Because it was the first description that did not blame her for surviving.
Evan was taken out first.
Douglas was not handcuffed yet.

But his empire had already begun to fall.
