PART 5

The folder was still on the hospital tray.

Evan had forgotten it there when Simon entered.

That was his first mistake.

His second was assuming old men did not notice paper.

Simon noticed everything.

He picked up the folder with two fingers, as if it were something contaminated.

Evan lunged forward.

“Don’t touch that.”

Security blocked him.

Simon opened the first page.

His expression did not change.

That was how Serena knew it was bad.

He turned the second page.

Then the third.

Then he looked at Douglas.

“You trained your son well.”

Douglas said nothing.

Evan pointed at the folder.

“It’s normal family planning.”

Simon lifted the page.

“Postpartum medical authority.”

“Temporary financial control.”

“Restricted visitation.”

“Trust reallocation.”

He looked at Serena.

“Did you agree to any of this?”

Her eyes filled.

“No.”

Evan snapped, “She doesn’t understand legal structure.”

Simon’s voice sharpened.

“She understands the word no.”

A doctor entered then.

Dr. Helen Morris.

Fifty-six, calm, with the kind of face that had seen enough family lies to dislike them on sight.

She had delivered Owen six hours earlier.

She saw Serena’s neck and stopped.

“What happened?”

Evan opened his mouth.

Simon spoke first.

“Her husband put his hands on her after delivery.”

Evan shouted, “That is not what happened.”

Serena flinched.

Dr. Morris crossed to the bed and gently tilted Serena’s chin.

Her face changed.

Not visibly to everyone.

Enough for Simon to see.

“These bruises are consistent with manual compression.”

Douglas stepped forward.

“Doctor, be careful.”

Dr. Morris turned.

“No.”

“You be careful.”

The room went silent.

She pressed the call button.

“We need a forensic nurse.”

“And police.”

Evan’s confidence faltered.

Douglas’s eyes narrowed.

“You don’t know who we are.”

Dr. Morris looked at Serena.

“I know who my patient is.”

That sentence did something to Serena.

It made her cry.

Not from fear.

From being placed first by someone with authority.

Simon leaned close to her.

“You still want me here?”

She nodded violently.

“Yes.”

Evan laughed bitterly.

“You’re turning my wife against me.”

Serena looked up then.

Her voice was hoarse.

“You did that.”

The words were small.

But they were the first words she had spoken to him without fear all day.

Simon stood between them.

The tattoo remained visible.

Douglas could not stop staring at it.

Dr. Morris picked up the legal folder and handed it to security for safekeeping.

“No one removes evidence from this room.”

Evidence.

The word made Evan go pale.

For the first time, Serena saw something satisfying.

Her husband had entered the hospital thinking paperwork would give him control.

Now that same paperwork had become proof.
