PART 8
Douglas called three lawyers before the police escorted him out of the hospital.
That was how men like him prayed.
Not to God.
To legal teams.
The first lawyer told him to say nothing.
The second asked whether the recording could be authenticated.
The third stopped answering after Detective Bennett mentioned her father’s old field notes.
By evening, the Harrow family name had become fragile.
Not broken yet.
Fragile.
And fragile things crack loudly when pressure is applied correctly.
Simon stayed with Serena through the night.
He sat in the corner chair, jacket folded over his lap, tattoo hidden again beneath his sleeve.
Owen slept in the bassinet beside the bed.
Serena did not sleep much.
Every time the hallway made a sound, her eyes opened.
Simon noticed each time.
He said nothing.
He did not tell her she was safe as if one sentence could erase a hand around her throat.
He simply stayed.
At 3:40 a.m., Serena whispered, “Did you kill people?”
Simon opened his eyes.
He had not been sleeping either.
“Yes.”
She looked at him.
“Were you a bad man?”
He leaned forward.
“No.”
“But I have done hard things.”
She thought about that.
“Are you going to hurt them?”
Simon’s face went still.
“No.”
Serena blinked through tears.
“Then why did you tell me to close my eyes?”
He looked at his hands.
“Because I was afraid my face would scare you.”
That answer broke her.
Not because it was dramatic.
Because it was honest.
Simon continued.
“When I saw your neck, I felt the old war come back.”
“I needed one second to put it where it belonged.”
Serena wiped her eyes.
“Where is that?”
“In the hands of the law.”
“And in the truth.”
She looked toward Owen.
“I don’t want him raised in fear.”
“Then he won’t be.”
“How do you know?”
Simon stood slowly and walked to the bassinet.
He looked down at the newborn boy.
“Because his mother called for help.”
“And help came.”
By morning, Detective Bennett returned.
She had not slept either.
She brought news.
The old Broken Crown recording had been matched to references in archived military files.
Her father’s notes contained shipment codes linked to companies that later became Harrow subsidiaries.
Federal investigators were interested.
Very interested.
Serena listened from the bed.
“So Douglas…”
Detective Bennett nodded.
“May be facing more than local charges.”
Simon’s mouth tightened.
Good.
Then Detective Bennett turned to Serena.
“There’s something else.”
Serena froze.
“What?”
“The hospital legal folder your husband brought included a clause giving him emergency authority over your child’s trust.”
Serena looked down at Owen.
Her voice vanished.
Simon spoke for her.
“He was trying to take from the baby too?”
Detective Bennett’s face was grim.
“Yes.”
The war was not over.

It had simply changed rooms.
