PART 4

Serena had married Evan Harrow because he was gentle when she was grieving.

That was the part that hurt most.

He had not arrived cruel.

Cruel men rarely do.

They arrive helpful.

Patient.

Soft-voiced.

They learn your wounds before they use them.

Serena’s mother died when she was twenty-four.

Her father had been gone since childhood.

Simon became the last steady family she had.

He walked her down the aisle because she asked.

Evan smiled that day.

He thanked Simon for “protecting our girl.”

Simon had looked at him for a long moment and said, “Keep her safe.”

Evan had answered, “Always.”

The first year was beautiful enough to make the second year confusing.

Evan called her stubborn.

Then dramatic.

Then ungrateful.

Then embarrassing.

His father, Douglas, visited often.

Too often.

He spoke to Serena like she was a guest in her own marriage.

He complained about her clothes.

Her friends.

Her job.

Her refusal to quit working for a nonprofit clinic.

When Serena became pregnant, everything tightened.

Evan wanted control of the nursery.

Douglas wanted control of the trust Serena’s mother had left her.

They called it planning.

Protection.

Family structure.

Serena called Simon twice to tell him she felt watched.

Both times, Evan walked in before she could finish.

Then came the final month of pregnancy.

The pressure became open.

Evan wanted Serena to sign documents granting him medical decision access, financial management authority during postpartum recovery, and joint oversight of her inheritance.

Serena said no.

That was when the charm ended.

The first bruise came from a grabbed wrist.

The second from a door pushed too hard.

The third from Evan’s fingers tightening around her chin while he whispered, “You don’t get to make me look weak.”

On the morning Owen was born, Serena thought the danger would pause.

Surely no one would threaten a woman who had just delivered a baby.

She was wrong.

Douglas arrived with flowers.

Evan arrived with paperwork.

The nurse had barely stepped out when Evan placed the folder on the rolling hospital table.

“Sign it.”

Serena looked at the sleeping newborn in her arms.

“No.”

Douglas sighed.

“You young women always mistake drama for strength.”

Serena reached for the call button.

Evan grabbed her wrist.

She tried to pull away without waking the baby.

That made him angrier.

He leaned over the bed and squeezed her throat just long enough to make terror replace pain.

Not long enough to leave no mark.

Long enough to teach.

Then he smiled.

“I was just teaching her who’s in charge.”

He said it later because he believed the room belonged to him.

He believed his father’s money would explain anything.

He believed Serena’s fear would keep her quiet.

Then Simon walked in with soup.
