PART 6

Simon did not carry a gun.

That surprised Evan.

Men like Evan understood force only when it looked like something from a movie.

A weapon.

A raised fist.

A threat shouted loud enough to impress someone.

Simon carried a phone, an old leather notebook, and a folded photograph in his wallet.

Those were worse.

When the police arrived, Simon asked for Detective Laura Bennett by name.

Douglas heard it and went rigid.

“You know her?”

Simon looked at him.

“I know her father.”

Detective Bennett reached the maternity room twenty minutes later.

She was in her forties, practical, sharp-eyed, and instantly unhappy when she saw Serena’s neck.

She listened to Dr. Morris.

She listened to Serena.

She listened to the security officers.

Then she looked at Simon.

“Captain Whitaker.”

Simon nodded.

“Detective.”

Evan stared.

“Captain?”

Simon ignored him.

Douglas did not.

His face had begun to sweat.

Detective Bennett noticed the tattoo.

Her expression changed only slightly.

Respect.

Recognition.

“You were Broken Crown,” she said.

Simon’s gaze remained on Douglas.

“Yes.”

Evan looked at his father.

“What the hell is going on?”

Douglas spoke through his teeth.

“Nothing.”

Simon removed the folded photograph from his wallet.

He placed it on the hospital counter.

Five men stood in desert uniforms beside a supply truck.

One of them was young Simon.

One was Detective Bennett’s father.

One was Douglas Harrow.

Serena stared.

“Douglas was military?”

Simon shook his head.

“Contractor.”

Douglas snapped, “Ancient history.”

Simon took out his phone.

“No.”

“Unfinished history.”

He played the recording.

The sound was old and rough.

Static.

Wind.

A younger Douglas speaking fast.

“If the manifests disappear, no one can connect the sale.”

Another voice asked about medical kits.

Douglas laughed.

“Dead men don’t audit.”

Detective Bennett’s face hardened.

Evan looked sick.

The room had gone so quiet that Owen’s tiny breathing seemed loud.

Simon stopped the recording.

“The original was destroyed in the convoy blast.”

Douglas looked at him in horror.

Simon continued.

“But Bennett made a duplicate.”

The detective’s jaw tightened at the mention of her father.

“My father died in that blast.”

Simon looked at her.

“I know.”

Douglas backed into the basin again.

“No.”

Simon stepped closer.

“You built a fortune on missing supplies and dead soldiers.”

Douglas’s mouth opened.

No words came.

Simon’s voice dropped.

“And now your son puts his hands on my niece while trying to steal her inheritance in a hospital bed.”

He leaned in just enough for Douglas to hear every word.

“You should’ve remembered who I was.”

Douglas retched into the metal basin.

Evan finally understood why his father was afraid.

This was not only a family scandal.

This was a resurrection.
