PART 1
“Her husband left for a business trip… then their six-year-old whispered, ‘Mommy, we have to run.’”
Claire Warren had one hand on the front doorknob when her daughter grabbed her sweater from behind.
Lily was barefoot in a yellow dress, hair tangled from sleep, eyes wide with a terror no six-year-old should know.
“Mommy… we have to run.”
“Now.”
Claire turned so fast her shoulder hit the white door.
Outside, morning light spilled across their quiet suburban street.
The American flag on the porch moved gently in the wind.
Everything looked normal.
That was what made it worse.
Their bags were already on the floor.
A child’s backpack.
A leather purse.
A blue emergency folder Claire had packed three days earlier without fully admitting why.
Her husband, Daniel, had left for a business trip at dawn.
He kissed Lily’s forehead.
Kissed Claire’s cheek.
Smiled like a man leaving behind a safe home.
But Lily was shaking.
Claire crouched and took her daughter’s small hands.
“Lily, what did you hear?”
Lily looked toward the front door.
Her voice cracked.
“Daddy said to make it look like an accident.”
Claire’s blood turned cold.
For one second, the house went silent.
Then the door lock clicked from the outside.
Claire froze.
The sound was tiny.
Metal turning inside metal.
But it was louder than a scream.
She pulled Lily behind her.
“Stay behind me.”
A shadow moved across the frosted side window.
Someone stood on the porch.
Not Daniel.
Too tall.
Too broad.
Claire reached down and gripped the heavy metal flashlight she kept beside the emergency folder.
The doorknob twisted slowly.
Then a man’s voice came through the door.
Low.
Patient.
Familiar enough to be terrifying.
“Claire…”
“Open the door.”
Lily buried her face against Claire’s jeans.
Claire lifted the flashlight and stared at the shadow.
The business trip was a lie.
