PART 5

The crash came from the sunroom.

Claire knew it instantly.

Daniel had replaced the sunroom lock two weeks earlier and told her the old one was sticking.

Now she understood why.

He needed one weak door.

One planned entry.

One place the police would later call an accident or a break-in.

Claire ran to the laundry room.

Lily was under the folding table, holding the phone with both hands.

The dispatcher’s voice came through the speaker.

“Officers are on the way.”

Claire grabbed Lily’s backpack and shoved the blue folder inside.

Then she pulled the dryer vent cover loose.

Behind it was the second part of her plan.

A small panic alarm connected to the neighbor’s house.

Daniel had mocked Mrs. Alvarez next door for being paranoid after her husband died.

Claire had not mocked her.

She had listened.

Mrs. Alvarez had installed a shared alarm for emergencies after Claire once helped her during a fall.

Claire pressed the button three times.

Across the fence, a shrieking alarm exploded.

Lights flashed outside Mrs. Alvarez’s kitchen window.

A dog began barking.

The man in the sunroom cursed.

Another voice answered from the front.

Two men.

Claire’s chest tightened.

Lily crawled out.

“Mommy?”

Claire lifted her.

“We’re going out the side.”

“But the locks.”

“Not the dog door.”

Lily stared.

“We don’t have a dog.”

Claire kissed her forehead.

“Mrs. Alvarez does.”

The houses shared a narrow side fence with a low maintenance panel between yards.

Daniel never noticed it because he never noticed anything that did not serve him.

Claire carried Lily through the laundry room, opened the side utility window, and pushed the backpack out first.

A man’s footsteps hit the kitchen tile.

“Claire.”

Not outside now.

Inside.

Claire lifted Lily through the window.

“Go.”

Lily sobbed.

“No.”

“Go to Mrs. Alvarez.”

The little girl dropped into the bushes outside.

Claire climbed after her just as the laundry room door opened.

A man in a dark jacket grabbed Claire’s ankle.

Claire kicked hard.

Her boot connected with his face.

He shouted.

Claire fell into the bushes, grabbed Lily’s hand, and ran toward the fence panel as sirens began to wail in the distance.
