PART 6

Mrs. Alvarez opened her back door before Claire reached the porch.

She was seventy-one, five feet tall, and holding a shotgun like she had been waiting all her life for someone to underestimate her.

“Inside.”

Claire pushed Lily through first.

Then stumbled in after her.

Mrs. Alvarez slammed the door and locked it.

“Downstairs.”

Claire stared.

“What?”

Mrs. Alvarez pointed with the barrel.

“Basement.”

Claire obeyed.

Lily clung to her hand as they hurried down the narrow steps into a storm shelter lined with canned food, blankets, flashlights, and old photographs.

Mrs. Alvarez followed and locked the steel door from inside.

Only then did Claire collapse onto the bottom step.

Lily threw herself into her mother’s arms.

The prepaid phone was still connected.

The dispatcher was speaking.

“Claire, officers are arriving.”

Claire pressed the phone closer.

“We’re at the neighbor’s house.”

“Basement shelter.”

“Two men are inside my home.”

“My husband Daniel Warren may have sent them.”

The dispatcher asked, “Where is your husband now?”

Claire looked up.

“Supposedly on a business trip.”

Mrs. Alvarez snorted.

“He isn’t.”

Claire turned.

“What?”

Mrs. Alvarez moved to a small monitor on the shelf.

It showed the front of Claire’s house from a hidden camera mounted in her bird feeder.

Claire saw police cars turning onto the street.

Then she saw Daniel’s black SUV parked three houses down.

Her stomach turned.

He had never left.

He was watching.

Lily whispered, “Daddy said he had a plane.”

Claire held her tighter.

Mrs. Alvarez tapped the screen.

“No suitcase in his hand this morning.”

“I saw him drive away.”

“Then circle back without headlights.”

Claire stared at the monitor.

A police officer approached Daniel’s SUV.

For a moment, nothing happened.

Then Daniel stepped out.

Suit.

Tie.

Perfect hair.

The image of a worried husband.

He lifted both hands and spoke calmly.

Claire could not hear the words.

But she knew the performance.

My wife is unstable.

My daughter is scared.

There has been a misunderstanding.

Then one of the men from inside Claire’s house tried to climb out the back sunroom window.

Police tackled him in the yard.

Daniel’s mask cracked on camera.

For one second, he looked exactly like Lily had described him.
