PART 7
The police found three things inside Claire’s house.
The first was the signal blocker hidden behind the living room bookshelf.
The second was a gas valve loosened near the basement water heater.
The third was a printed medical file on the kitchen counter.
Claire’s file.
Marked with notes in Daniel’s handwriting.
Anxiety history.
Sleep medication.
Possible confusion.
Postpartum depression.
Except Claire had never had postpartum depression.
She had never taken sleep medication.
She had never signed the life insurance forms attached to the file.
Daniel had built a dead woman before killing the living one.
Officer Bennett came to Mrs. Alvarez’s basement two hours later.
Claire sat on an old floral couch with Lily asleep against her lap.
The officer removed his cap.
“Mrs. Warren, your husband is in custody for questioning.”
Claire did not feel relief.
Not yet.
Fear had been living in her body too long to move out after one sentence.
“What about the men?”
“Both detained.”
“One has already asked for a lawyer.”
“Good.”
Officer Bennett hesitated.
“There is something else.”
Claire’s fingers tightened around Lily’s blanket.
“What?”
“We found a device connected to your basement camera.”
“It was streaming to your husband’s phone.”
Mrs. Alvarez muttered something in Spanish that sounded like a prayer and a curse.
Claire looked down at Lily.
“She heard him.”
The officer nodded.
“Your daughter may have saved your life.”
Claire closed her eyes.
That sentence hurt.
No child should have to save her mother from her father.
Later, a child advocate arrived.
Then Claire’s sister.
Then an attorney.
By evening, Daniel’s business trip had become police evidence.
His flight was never booked.
His calendar invite was fake.
His assistant told detectives Daniel had canceled the trip a week earlier but asked her to keep the entry active.
The two men were not repairmen.
One was a private security contractor Daniel had used at work.
The other had a record for staged insurance claims.
Claire listened to each fact like someone reading a weather report about the storm that destroyed her house.
Then Lily woke up.
She looked around the shelter.
“Is Daddy gone?”
Claire kissed her hair.
“Yes.”
Lily whispered, “For real?”
Claire’s voice broke.
May you like
“For real.”
