PART 2

Claire had packed the emergency folder because of the basement camera.

Three nights earlier, she had woken up to get water and noticed the small tablet on Daniel’s desk glowing in the dark.

The screen showed their house.

Not the nursery camera.

Not the driveway camera.

A hidden camera pointed at the basement stairs.

Claire stood in the doorway and watched her husband adjust the angle.

Daniel thought she was asleep.

He wore a headset and spoke softly into a late-night call.

“No.”

“She still uses the basement laundry.”

“Thursday morning is best.”

“She’ll be alone after I leave.”

Claire’s skin prickled.

She stepped backward before the floorboard could creak.

The next day, Daniel acted normal.

Coffee.

News.

A joke about Lily’s cereal.

A kiss on Claire’s hair.

Then he asked if she had updated the life insurance beneficiary like he suggested.

She said she had not had time.

His smile stayed.

His eyes did not.

After that, Claire began noticing everything.

The smell of gas near the basement door that disappeared when Daniel was home.

The new smart lock app installed without telling her.

The way Daniel took her car key to “check the tire pressure.”

The missing copy of her medical records from the file cabinet.

The way he spoke to Lily too gently whenever Claire entered the room.

Claire called her sister.

No answer.

She called the bank.

Daniel had tried to move funds from their joint account into an investment trust she had never signed.

She called an attorney.

The attorney said, “Do not confront him alone.”

That night, Claire packed the blue folder.

Birth certificates.

Cash.

Passport.

A flash drive.

Medical records.

Lily’s school papers.

The deed to the house her grandmother left her before she married Daniel.

She told herself she was overreacting.

Then Lily came into the kitchen at 7:11 that morning, white-faced and trembling.

“Mommy… we have to run.”

And Claire finally understood.

Her fear had not been imagination.
