PART 3

Lily had not meant to listen.

That was what she kept whispering while Claire held her behind the door.

“I wasn’t spying.”

“I promise.”

Claire pressed one finger to her lips and guided Lily backward toward the kitchen.

“I know, baby.”

“Tell me quietly.”

The man outside knocked once.

Not hard.

Controlled.

That frightened Claire more than pounding.

Lily clutched her dress.

“Daddy was in his office.”

“I went to ask where my unicorn socks were.”

“He was talking to someone.”

Claire’s mouth went dry.

“What did he say?”

Lily looked toward the entryway.

“He said you take medicine.”

Claire’s heart stopped.

“I don’t.”

“I know.”

Lily’s voice shook.

“He said people would believe you forgot the stove.”

Claire closed her eyes for one second.

The gas smell.

The basement camera.

The missing medical file.

Daniel had not only planned harm.

He had planned the story.

Lily kept going.

“He said the stairs were better if the kitchen didn’t work.”

The man outside tried the knob again.

Claire tightened her grip on the flashlight.

From outside, the voice came again.

“Claire, Daniel asked me to check the leak.”

Lily whimpered.

“That’s him.”

Claire whispered, “Who?”

“The man from Daddy’s phone.”

Claire looked through the kitchen doorway toward the front window.

The shadow shifted.

The man wore a dark jacket and gloves.

No toolbox.

No marked truck.

No company logo.

Claire pulled Lily toward the back hall.

Then stopped.

The back door had a smart lock too.

If Daniel controlled the locks remotely, running blindly could trap them outside.

She took out her phone.

No service.

Not no bars.

No service at all.

Daniel had installed a signal blocker.

The realization moved through Claire like ice water.

The man outside knocked again.

“Claire.”

“Open up.”

Claire looked down at Lily.

Her daughter’s eyes were full of fear, but also trust.

Claire could not panic.

Not now.

She opened the pantry door and reached behind the cereal boxes.

Her old prepaid phone was still there.

Charged.

Hidden.

Waiting.

For the first time that morning, Claire allowed herself one breath.

Daniel had planned.

But so had she.
