Chapter 25 - THE WARD FAMILY WITHOUT A SINGLE HEIRHelen Ward pleaded guilty before Lydia’s trial began.
She had forged Natalie’s incapacity report, supplied potassium chloride to Adrian, created hospital credentials and helped maintain the Ward Continuity Trust.
She insisted she believed Adrian would only use the syringe to activate the evidence system.
The toxicology report showed she prepared a lethal concentration.
“You could have supplied saline,” the prosecutor said.
“Adrian would have tested it.”
“Then you knew he required real poison.”
“Yes.”
Helen had created a loaded weapon and trusted an attempted thief not to complete the crime.
She was convicted of reckless attempted-harm conspiracy, medical fraud, identity offenses and obstruction.
Evidence did not prove she intended Natalie’s death. Her cooperation, years under threat and disclosure of the Ward trust reduced the sentence.
The lethal drug and forged medical authority increased it.
She received a substantial custodial term.
Thomas was already imprisoned.
Their marriage ended through ordinary divorce.
Neither parent retained authority over Celeste or Claire’s patents.
The Ward twins’ cases remained separate.
Celeste had participated in scaffold sabotage, infiltrated Adrian, conducted an affair, gathered evidence and waited while he approached Natalie’s IV.
She pleaded guilty to sabotage conspiracy, unlawful surveillance and obstruction.
Her cooperation against Adrian, Evelyn and the defense-contract network reduced her sentence to limited custody and supervised release.
The court did not criminalize the affair itself.
Natalie addressed Celeste during sentencing.
“You believed seducing him would expose his character.”
“Yes.”
“You also wanted revenge for your father.”
“Yes.”
“Did you care what the affair did to me?”
“Not enough.”
The answer remained.
Claire had impersonated Celeste, called Adrian before the injection and attempted to redirect the Ward trust.
She also surrendered after learning Thomas had recognized both twins equally and helped disable the ring.
She pleaded guilty to identity fraud, attempted corporate theft and conspiracy.
Her childhood concealment and Evelyn’s manipulation affected the sentence. Her adult technical skill and deliberate decisions affected it too.
Claire received several years in custody followed by strict supervision.
The sisters did not reunite automatically.
Celeste felt robbed of a twin.
Claire felt robbed by the twin who received the visible family.
Both feelings were true and incompatible.
Their first voluntary meeting occurred after Claire’s release.
Thomas and Helen were absent.
No mediator required an embrace.
Claire asked:
“Did you ever wish I had survived?”
“I was told you died before I could remember you.”
“That was not my question.”
Celeste considered it.
“I wished I had a sister without knowing she was you.”
Claire nodded.
They began with shared medical information and patent decisions.
The original Ward patents belonged equally to both under Thomas’s authenticated statement. The court separated lawful ownership from the illegal trust.
Celeste and Claire could keep economic interests.
They could not use the patents to control Archer Dynamics automatically.
The twins licensed the locking technology to the restructured company under public oversight. A portion of revenue funded victims of illegal defense sales.
They retained personal income.
Survivors were not required to surrender all lawful property to prove they rejected inherited control.
Celeste later worked as an investigative consultant under restrictions concerning undercover relationships. Claire became a technical auditor outside biometric identity systems.
Their relationship grew through occasional dinners and long periods without contact.
Helen died after completing her sentence.
Celeste visited near the end.
Claire did not.
Thomas died in medical custody several years later. Both daughters attended separate memorials.
No Ward Continuity Trust activated.
The final patent agreement required current consent from both women and allowed either to leave without transferring her life to the other.
During the audit, engineers discovered that Claire’s childhood profile had been used to train identity models for thousands of twins and siblings.
