Chapter 5 - Dr. Helen WardHelen Ward entered the secured floor through a service passage known only to senior physicians.

She was sixty-one, thin, and strikingly similar to Celeste. Her hair had turned white, but the shape of her eyes removed any doubt.
Celeste stood behind the glass barrier.
“Mom?”
Helen stopped.
For several seconds, neither woman moved.
Then Celeste struck the glass with both palms.
“You let me bury you.”
Helen lowered her eyes.
Dana’s officers surrounded her and removed a medical bag from her shoulder.
Inside were sedation drugs, forged hospital badges, and a portable biometric scanner.
Helen asked to speak with Natalie privately.
Natalie laughed once.
“No one speaks privately in this room.”
Helen entered under guard.
She looked at Adrian before turning toward Natalie.
“He was never supposed to use the syringe.”
Adrian stared at her.
“You gave it to me.”
Celeste looked toward him.
Helen admitted she placed the syringe inside Adrian’s car with instructions claiming it contained a harmless cardiac medication that would temporarily destabilize Natalie’s monitors.
Adrian was told the false emergency would justify moving Natalie to another facility controlled by the board.
“You knew what potassium chloride would do,” Dana said.
Adrian remained silent.
He had read the label.
He understood.
Even if Helen had designed a different deception, Adrian chose murder once the weapon reached him.
Helen claimed Evelyn Shaw forced her cooperation after Thomas Ward discovered Archer Dynamics was selling restricted locking technology through illegal intermediaries.
Thomas planned to expose the board.
Evelyn arranged the boating accident.
Helen survived.
Thomas did not.
The board concealed Helen under a new identity and threatened Celeste if she returned.
“Why did you forge Natalie’s incapacity report?” Celeste asked.
“To keep you alive.”
“You helped them use me against Adrian.”
“I knew Martin recruited you. I tried to guide the operation from inside.”
“You sent the contractor records?”
“Yes.”
“You told me the scaffold would fail after the ceremony?”
“Yes.”
“Who changed the timer?”
Helen looked toward Natalie.
“Thomas.”
Celeste stopped breathing.
Her father was alive too.
Helen said Thomas survived the water and entered hiding separately. For years, they communicated through encrypted medical and engineering networks.
He believed exposing Evelyn required forcing the board to act publicly.
The scaffold sabotage was his design.
“He endangered hundreds of people,” Natalie said.
“He calculated the area would be cleared.”
“I was standing there.”
“He believed Adrian would move you.”
Adrian laughed bitterly.
“Thomas told me the west section was unstable. I thought it was another test.”
“You knew?” Natalie asked.
“I knew there was a defect. I did not know it would collapse during the speech.”
“You ordered photographers away.”
“I was trying to reduce casualties.”
“But you left me.”
Adrian said nothing.
He had seen the risk and protected everyone except the wife whose incapacity benefited him.
Helen admitted Thomas moved the timer forward after learning Evelyn planned to sell the defense division that night. He wanted the collapse to trigger federal inspection before the sale.
He believed Natalie would survive because the platform height was limited.
He miscalculated.
Natalie’s spinal injuries could leave her unable to walk permanently.
Helen’s voice broke.
“We thought the company had become too dangerous to expose through ordinary evidence.”
“So you used my body,” Natalie said.
“Yes.”
The confession carried no excuse large enough to contain the damage.
Dana ordered Helen’s communications device opened.
One active message thread connected to a user called T.W.
Thomas Ward.
His latest instruction read:
THE HOSPITAL EVENT HAS PRODUCED SUFFICIENT EVIDENCE. MOVE NATALIE BEFORE EVELYN’S TEAM ARRIVES.
An armed group was approaching the hospital.
Not police.
Not Dana’s officers.
A private security unit employed by Archer Dynamics’ board.
Evelyn had signed an order transferring Natalie into corporate medical custody.
The order called Dana’s team unauthorized kidnappers.
Martin examined the document.
Under the family trust, the board could move Natalie only if her attending physician certified the current facility unsafe.
Helen’s forged signature appeared beneath the certification.
She had not signed it.
Someone had cloned her authorization too.
Every identity in the conspiracy had become reusable.
Natalie looked at Dana.
“How long until they reach us?”
“Six minutes.”
The hospital’s outer security reported twelve armored officers entering the lobby with valid corporate credentials.
Dana had twenty officers inside the building.
A confrontation could turn the medical floor into a battlefield.
Natalie could not be moved safely without risking her spine.
The evidence screen displayed another live feed.
Thomas Ward stood inside Archer Dynamics’ headquarters.
Alive.
He held a remote trigger near the company’s central server room.
“If Evelyn removes Natalie from that bed,” he said, “every restricted defense file goes public.”
Celeste stared at the father she believed dead.
Thomas looked directly into the camera.
“And if Natalie remains, the board’s officers will take the room by force.”
He had not offered rescue.
May you like
He had created another impossible choice.
👉 Celeste’s parents were alive and had helped engineer the scaffold trap, while her father now threatened to expose national-security files unless Natalie obeyed him.
