Chapter 2 - The Door Behind Daniel

Daniel’s hand never reached the handle.
Claire noticed that.
She noticed everything now.
The way his right shoulder angled toward the door.
The way his left hand stayed raised, palm outward, not protecting Sophie, but controlling Claire’s line of sight.
The way Evelyn did not ask, “Who is this woman?”
She knew exactly who Claire was.
That was the second wound.
Not only Daniel alive.
Not only another woman in a hospital bed.
Not only a newborn in Evelyn’s arms.
Evelyn had known.
Claire looked at the older woman.
Pearl earrings.
Pearl necklace.
Beige cardigan.
Styled blonde hair.
The same elegant coldness Claire remembered from family dinners where affection always came with conditions.
Evelyn shifted beside Daniel, deliberately blocking Claire’s view of the crib and Sophie.
“Leave before you make this worse.”
Claire’s eyes moved to the baby.
A tiny hand flexed from the white blanket.
Safe.
Warm.
Innocent.
Claire’s face did not change.
Inside her coat pocket, her fingers brushed her phone.
The recorder was already active.
She had started it before entering the room, when the front desk told her the suite was under a name that should have been impossible.
She did not pull the phone out.
She did not look at the screen.
She only let her hand rest near it, calm and hidden.
Daniel saw the movement.
His eyes sharpened.
“What are you doing?”
Claire looked at him.
“Standing in front of the dead.”
Sophie made a small sound from the bed.
Daniel turned his head slightly toward her, then immediately faced Claire again.
Too fast.
Too careful.
He did not want Sophie asking questions either.
Claire saw that too.
The nursery mobile turned above the crib.
A soft mechanical lullaby played so faintly it sounded like a memory trying to stay buried.
Daniel lowered his voice.
“Claire, you need to leave.”
She stepped closer.
“No.”
Evelyn’s eyes narrowed.
The newborn stirred in her arms.
Claire’s gaze softened for the child, then hardened again on Daniel.
“Five years,” she said. “Five years of flowers on a grave with no body inside it.”
Daniel’s face twitched.
Not grief.
Annoyance.
May you like
That nearly broke her.
