Chapter 4 - Evelyn Holds the Newborn

Evelyn Mercer had always held things like she owned them.

Teacups.

Family photographs.

Conversation.

Daniel.

Now she held the newborn with that same careful authority.

Not carelessness.

Not danger.

The baby was safe in her arms.

But Claire could see the possessiveness in the angle of Evelyn’s body, the way she turned slightly whenever Claire’s eyes moved toward the child.

The baby was a shield.

A treasure.

A bargaining piece.

A truth too small to understand the room built around him.

Claire’s voice lowered.

“Evelyn, did you attend my husband’s funeral knowing he was alive?”

Evelyn’s eyes narrowed.

Daniel snapped, “Do not question my mother.”

Claire laughed once.

It came out broken and cold.

“There he is.”

Daniel stepped toward her.

Evelyn’s voice cut in.

“Daniel.”

He stopped.

That, too, Claire noticed.

Daniel still obeyed his mother faster than conscience.

Sophie pushed herself farther up.

“Funeral?”

Her voice trembled.

Daniel turned sharply.

“Sophie, rest.”

“No,” Sophie whispered. “What funeral?”

Evelyn’s expression flickered.

For the first time, fear touched her face.

Not for Claire.

Not for Daniel.

For control.

Claire looked at Sophie.

“I was married to him.”

Sophie’s mouth parted.

Daniel’s face twisted.

“Claire.”

She ignored him.

“I was told he died five years ago.”

Sophie’s eyes filled with tears.

“No.”

The word was small.

Not denial of Claire.

Denial of the world Daniel had made for her.

Evelyn moved closer to Daniel, still holding the newborn.

“Leave before you make this worse,” she repeated, but this time the threat was thinner.

Claire looked at the baby again.

The little boy’s face was peaceful beneath the cap.

Her own grief rose like a wave, but she held it back.

This was not his fault.

None of it was.

She would not let Daniel turn the child into a wall she was afraid to question.

Claire’s hand remained inside her coat pocket near the hidden recorder.

Daniel’s eyes flicked there again.

He knew something was wrong.

He just did not know how much of it had already been preserved.
