Chapter 7 - The Recorder No One Sees

Claire did not show the phone.
That was the point.
If she showed it, Daniel would react to the device.
If she kept it hidden, he would react to himself.
The phone rested inside her coat pocket, recording every breath, every denial, every command, every careless sentence spoken too soon.
She had learned that truth did not always need drama.
Sometimes it only needed storage.
Daniel stared at her pocket.
“What did you do?”
Claire looked at him.
“I came to visit a patient.”
“You came here to destroy my life.”
“No,” she said softly. “You built this life on top of mine.”
Sophie covered her mouth.
Tears slid down her face.
Evelyn’s expression flickered with irritation toward Sophie, as if the recovering woman’s distress were inconvenient.
Claire saw it.
So did Sophie.
Something shifted behind Sophie’s eyes.
She looked at Evelyn holding the baby and seemed to understand that she, too, had been managed.
Protected from questions.
Fed explanations.
Kept weak inside a beautiful suite while decisions happened around her.
Daniel reached toward Claire’s arm.
She stepped back before he touched her.
“Do not.”
His hand stopped midair.
The refusal shocked him.
It should not have.
But men like Daniel always believe the past leaves fingerprints on the women they controlled.
He thought she would still respond to his nearness.
She did.
Just not the way he wanted.
Claire’s gaze moved to the door.
Closed.
Not locked.
Daniel followed her eyes.
His throat worked.
“What’s outside?”
She did not answer.
Evelyn’s voice sharpened.
“Claire.”
The use of her name after five years of erasure felt almost obscene.
Claire looked at her mother-in-law.
“You watched me bury him.”
Evelyn’s eyes became hard.
“You buried what you were given.”
Sophie made a small horrified sound.
Daniel turned on Evelyn.
“Mother.”
Too late.
The sentence had landed.
Claire’s face went still.
The recorder continued.
Evelyn realized her mistake.
Her arms tightened around the baby.

Daniel’s panic returned in full.
