Chapter 6 - Sophie Understands Too Late

Sophie’s breathing changed.
The monitor beside her bed did not alarm, but the room heard the difference.
She looked at Daniel as if trying to match the man she knew with the stranger speaking in front of her.
“Daniel,” she whispered. “Were you married?”
He turned toward her too quickly.
“Not in any way that matters now.”
Claire’s eyes sharpened.
Sophie’s face crumpled.
Not in jealousy.
In fear.
Because that answer did not deny.
It dismissed.
And dismissal told her more than denial.
Evelyn rocked the newborn once, eyes fixed on Claire.
“You have no idea what you walked into.”
Claire turned to her.
“No. But you know exactly what I walked out of five years ago.”
Evelyn’s lips pressed together.
Daniel stepped between them again.
“Enough.”
Claire tilted her head.
“You keep saying that as if you still decide when truth stops.”
The words struck him.
He lunged forward one step, not touching her, but trying to reclaim space.
Claire did not move back.
Her black shoulder bag rested against her hip.
Her cream blazer remained smooth.
Her face was pale, but her eyes were clear.
Daniel stared at her.
The woman he expected to find broken had arrived observant.
That frightened him more than anger.
Sophie’s hand moved toward the side rail of the hospital bed.
“Someone tell me what is happening.”
No one answered.
The baby made a tiny sound.
Evelyn immediately looked down, murmuring softly, then glanced back up with fresh panic.
A newborn did not belong in this kind of room.
That was the horror.
Daniel had built a new family on top of a grave, and now the grave had opened in front of them all.
Claire’s hand shifted slightly in her pocket.
Daniel saw again.
“What’s in your pocket?”
Claire’s smile faded.
“Insurance.”
The word froze the room.
Not a reveal.
Not a confession.
Just a word with too many possible meanings.
Daniel’s face drained.
Evelyn’s eyes widened.
Sophie stared between them.
Claire did not explain.
The prompt would not reveal the insurance fraud.

The word only remained in the air like a match near gasoline.
