Chapter 9 - Then You’d Better Hope I Came Alone

Claire looked from the newborn to Daniel.

Then directly at Evelyn.

Her breathing steadied.

The heartbreak did not leave her face.

It simply stopped controlling it.

Daniel recognized that stillness too late.

Claire was not there to beg him back.

Not to collapse.

Not to compete with Sophie.

Not to plead for the life he had stolen.

She was there because a dead man had been careless enough to be found alive.

And because some lies rot from the inside until one door opens at the wrong time.

Evelyn lifted her chin.

“You think one scene changes anything?”

Claire’s eyes moved to the baby.

“One child changes everything.”

Sophie looked down at her son, tears trembling on her lashes.

Daniel stepped toward Claire again.

“Leave now, and I can still keep this quiet.”

Claire stared at him.

The audacity was almost calming.

“Keep what quiet?”

His mouth closed.

The footsteps outside remained still.

Waiting.

Claire took one slow step closer to Daniel.

He did not retreat this time, but fear tightened his jaw.

She spoke softly.

“Five years ago, I learned what your silence costs.”

Evelyn whispered, “Stop.”

Claire ignored her.

“I learned what it feels like to be handed a story and told to grieve inside it.”

Daniel’s eyes darted toward the door again.

Claire saw.

A restrained, knowing smile appeared through her heartbreak.

“Then you’d better hope I came alone.”

No one breathed.

Sophie stared at Claire.

Evelyn’s hands tightened around the newborn.

Daniel turned toward the doorway in sudden fear.

The hallway remained unseen.

The approaching person stayed hidden.

No police.

No backup revealed.

No arrests.

No legal outcome.

Only the door.

Only the footsteps.
