Chapter 8 - The Footsteps in the Hallway

The hallway outside the recovery suite remained quiet for three seconds too long.
Claire listened.
Daniel listened.
Evelyn listened.
Even Sophie seemed to hold her breath.
Then came the faint sound.
Footsteps.
Not hurried.
Not loud.
Approaching with steady purpose.
Daniel’s head snapped toward the door.
Evelyn’s arms tightened around the newborn.
Claire did not turn.
That was what scared them.
She had expected the sound.
Daniel looked at her.
“Who did you bring?”
Claire’s expression remained calm.
She did not answer.
No backup was revealed.
No police entered.
No legal authority appeared.
Only footsteps.
That was enough.
Daniel moved toward the door, then stopped, trapped between wanting to block whoever approached and wanting to keep Claire from speaking to Sophie.
Evelyn whispered, “Daniel, do something.”
Claire looked at her.
“He has been doing something for five years.”
The words landed quietly.
Evelyn’s face contorted.
Sophie pushed herself higher, wincing from weakness.
“Five years?” she asked.
Daniel spun toward her.
“Sophie, stop talking.”
That was another mistake.
Sophie’s eyes widened.
For the first time, anger joined her fear.
“This is my room.”
Daniel froze.
Claire saw the moment Sophie reclaimed one inch of space.
Small.
Fragile.
Important.
The baby stirred again, and Evelyn rocked him gently, but her eyes stayed on the door.
Footsteps came closer.
A shadow crossed the frosted strip near the suite entrance.
No face.
No identity.
No answer.
Daniel swallowed.
Claire’s voice dropped.
“Now you’re afraid of a door.”
He glared at her.
“You have no idea what you’re threatening.”
Claire’s face hardened.
“I know exactly what was taken from me.”
The footsteps stopped outside.
The handle did not turn yet.
Everyone stared at it.

The baby mobile kept rotating above the crib, soft stars moving in circles as if time had learned nothing.
