Chapter 10 - THE ARCHIVE LOCKDOWNMiranda guided the group toward a maintenance hatch behind the evidence cabinets.

“Travis installed the suppression system after Daniel’s accident,” she said.

Travis shouted, “You approved it.”

“Yes.”

The truth passed between them without innocence.

Owen forced the hatch open.

Everyone entered a narrow service tunnel while the archive sealed behind them. Federal security disabled the gas system before anyone lost consciousness.

The attack originated from the foundation boardroom.

Someone used Owen’s credentials.

Owen surrendered his phone immediately.

The device had been cloned.

A hidden application transmitted the archive alert to another user.

Celeste Morgan, the hospital advocate, received the signal.

She disappeared before agents reached her apartment.

Celeste had represented victims publicly for years. Pearl trusted her enough to place her on the board.

Or appeared to.

The third file included a note about Celeste.

The most convincing protector is often the one who profits from endless harm.

Celeste’s nonprofit received millions from hospitals accused of abuse. She negotiated private settlements requiring victims to remain silent, then kept administrative fees.

The Price network used her as controlled opposition.

She helped Travis locate the compensation reserve.

The archive lockdown was intended to destroy evidence and kill the new chair before Jade could review it.

Miranda provided a safe house address Celeste used.

Agents found documents but no Celeste.

One folder contained medical photographs of Pearl after the hospice transfer.

She appeared alive in a coastal clinic.

Another image showed Daniel unconscious beside her.

The timestamp was three days old.

Someone had recaptured them after the video message.

A handwritten note on the back read:

Jade opens the archive or Daniel stops breathing.

Celeste needed something inside the central evidence system.

Jade searched the recovered backup.

A file named Pearl Directive Zero required another key.

The key was hidden inside Pearl’s handwritten cards.

Each card contained a tiny watermark.

When arranged by date, the watermarks formed a numerical code.

The returned letters Miranda intercepted were not only emotional evidence.

Pearl used them to send Jade the archive password.

Miranda had unknowingly preserved the key by refusing to deliver them.

Jade arranged every card across the conference table.

The code opened Directive Zero.

Pearl appeared on screen.

“This archive contains proof that Daniel’s accident, my isolation, and the hospital thefts belong to one operation. Celeste Morgan is not its leader.”

A second image appeared.

Judge Price, Dr. Price, Travis, and Celeste stood around a dining table.

At the head sat Jade’s aunt Vivian Mason—Daniel’s older sister.

Vivian had attended the will reading as a grieving relative and left without speaking.

Jade barely knew her.

Pearl continued.

“Vivian convinced Daniel to investigate the fund. She also reported every move he made.”

The family conspiracy extended through both sides.

Vivian inherited nothing in Pearl’s public will.

She had not reacted because she never expected money from the visible estate.

She wanted control of the victim foundation.

Daniel’s status granted him authority.

If he died, Jade inherited.

If Jade died or became legally unfit, authority passed to Daniel’s nearest adult sibling.

Vivian.

The archive lockdown would have made her chair.

Jade remembered Vivian hugging her before the will reading and whispering, “Whatever happens, stay calm.”

It had sounded comforting.

Now it sounded like instruction.

Miranda looked at Jade.

“Vivian is the person Pearl feared most.”

“Why?”

“Because Daniel still loves her.”

The coastal map inside the third file pointed toward Vivian’s family property in Maine.

A private medical cabin stood beyond the marked road.

Jade prepared to leave with federal agents.

Leonard stopped her.

“Pearl’s directive says the chair must not enter any rescue location.”

“She is my grandmother.”

“And Daniel is your father.”

“I know.”

“Vivian is counting on that.”

Jade hated the boundary.

She accepted it.

Mara? Not in this story. The lead investigator, Agent Rachel Cole, took command. Jade remained in the operations center.

The team reached the Maine cabin.

It was empty.

Pearl’s wheelchair stood near the window.

Daniel’s blood marked the floor.

A live speaker activated.

Vivian’s voice filled the room.

“Jade, your mother taught you to believe isolation is cruelty. Sometimes it is the only way to make someone choose correctly.”

👉 The archive identified Vivian as the hidden strategist, but her empty Maine cabin suggested she had already moved Pearl and Daniel toward a final test designed specifically for Jade.
