Chapter 5 - THE ASSISTANT WHO DELIVERED THE LETTERLeonard’s assistant was named Claire Dawson.
She had worked for him for eleven years and handled every confidential Harrow file.
Police found her sedan abandoned near Grand Central Terminal. Miranda’s driver lay unconscious inside the parking structure.
Claire had taken his keys and vehicle.
She left behind a voicemail for Leonard.
“I did not start the fire. Travis did. If Jade wants the missing page, she must stop trusting Pearl’s version of Daniel.”
Jade listened twice.
“What does that mean?”
Leonard looked genuinely shaken.
“I don’t know.”
“You hired her.”
“Pearl recommended her.”
Another person chosen through Pearl.
Another relationship built around hidden information.
Claire contacted Jade directly that evening.
She requested a meeting inside a crowded hotel lobby with no lawyers.
Jade refused the condition.
“You can speak with my attorney present or not at all.”
Claire agreed reluctantly.
She arrived wearing a black coat and carrying a thin folder.
“Daniel survived the boating accident,” she said.
Jade kept her expression controlled.
“Where is he?”
“I don’t know now.”
Claire had been a junior reporter at Harrow Media when Daniel investigated the hospital fund. After the boat exploded, she found him injured on the riverbank.
Daniel begged her not to call police.
He believed Judge Price controlled the local investigation.
Claire drove him to a private clinic under another name.
“Why didn’t he contact me?”
“Pearl told him Miranda would use you to force his silence.”
“So everyone decided I was safer grieving.”
“Yes.”
Claire did not defend it.
Daniel remained hidden for years while collecting evidence. He returned three months before Pearl’s death because she said the protected estate was under immediate threat.
“What happened after that?”
“He disappeared again.”
“Did Miranda find him?”
“I think Travis did.”
Claire opened the folder.
The missing ledger page was inside.
Daniel Mason: Living witness. Protection account active.
The account received monthly payments until four days after Pearl’s reported death.
Then every dollar was withdrawn in cash.
Authorized user: Leonard Hale.
Jade turned toward the estate lawyer.
Leonard stared at the document.
“My signature was forged.”
Claire laughed bitterly.
“That is what everyone says once paper becomes dangerous.”
Leonard requested the original banking record. Claire had only a copy.
She explained the bank held surveillance footage of the withdrawal.
Before she could identify the branch, a glass of water on the table shattered beside her.
A bullet struck the wall behind them.
Hotel security forced everyone to the floor.
The shooter escaped from a construction level across the street.
Claire survived.
The attack made one fact clear.
Someone feared the bank footage.
Police moved the group to a secure office.
Claire finally provided the branch number.
The account belonged to a private bank in Connecticut.
Surveillance showed a man wearing Leonard’s coat, glasses, and signature ring withdrawing the funds.
His face remained mostly hidden.
But when he turned, Jade recognized Travis.
He had disguised himself as the lawyer.
The bank employee accepted the signature because Travis presented Leonard’s biometric authorization card.
Only Leonard carried that card.
Leonard opened his wallet.
The card was gone.
He last used it at Pearl’s hospice room on the night she died.
Miranda had been present.
So had Nurse Evelyn.
The bank withdrawal occurred six hours later.
Jade looked at Evelyn’s statement again.
The nurse had confessed to blocking visits.
