Chapter 8 - THE LAWYER’S SECOND IDENTITYLeonard did not deny the initial could refer to him.

He removed his glasses and placed them on the table.

“My birth name was Leonard Price.”

Jade stared.

“You are related to Judge Price.”

“He is my half-brother.”

“And Dr. Roland Price?”

“My cousin.”

The Harrow family attorney belonged to the same network controlling the court, clinic, and hospital records.

Leonard changed his surname after discovering his father participated in patient-settlement fraud. Pearl hired him because he possessed access to Price family documents.

“Why hide this from me?”

“Pearl believed Miranda would reject any evidence if she knew I was a Price.”

“And I am supposed to accept it?”

“No.”

Leonard opened a locked cabinet.

Inside were reports documenting his cooperation with federal investigators for fourteen years.

He had helped Pearl trace the stolen medical funds.

He also admitted one failure.

The night Daniel’s boat exploded, Leonard delivered the marina schedule to Judge Price.

“I believed he was arranging witness protection.”

“You helped them find my father.”

“Yes.”

“Did you know they intended to kill him?”

“No.”

“You knew they were corrupt.”

“Yes.”

Jade stood.

Leonard did not ask her to sit.

He deserved the anger.

The initial L might also refer to another person.

Pearl’s records mentioned a consultant named Lydia Cross. Lydia managed Harrow Medical Transport and signed the ambulance order removing Pearl from hospice.

Owen traced Lydia’s current identity.

She was Claire Dawson, Leonard’s assistant.

Claire had not merely discovered Daniel after the accident.

She worked for the company that moved Pearl on her final night.

Jade contacted her under federal supervision.

Claire answered from an unknown location.

“My name was Lydia until Daniel asked me to disappear.”

“Did you transport Pearl?”

“Yes.”

“Was she alive?”

“Yes.”

The answer changed everything.

Pearl had staged the appearance of death.

She feared Miranda and Travis would never expose the full network while she remained legally active. The false death triggered the will, Jade’s inheritance, and the foundation succession.

“Where is Pearl?”

“I don’t know.”

“You moved her.”

“To Saint Rowan Clinic. Daniel collected her.”

“What body returned to the hospice?”

“A donated cadaver supplied by Dr. Price.”

Jade felt sick.

The will reading, funeral, grief, and family conflict had all unfolded around a planned false death.

Pearl may have believed the strategy necessary.

She had still denied Jade the truth.

“Why deliver the blue letter?” Jade asked.

“Pearl ordered me to if Miranda threatened you.”

“You watched my mother squeeze my wrist?”

“Through the conference-room camera.”

“And waited?”

“I needed her threat recorded.”

Jade ended the call before anger overwhelmed judgment.

Leonard revealed the conference room indeed had security audio. Miranda’s exact threat had been preserved.

Pearl anticipated it.

The second file did not merely expose isolation.

It triggered a legal protection clause based on coercion.

Miranda’s threat automatically suspended her ability to challenge the protected estate for thirty days.

Pearl had turned Miranda’s cruelty into evidence.

Again, she had designed people around their worst instincts.

Jade asked Leonard whether the will remained valid if Pearl was alive.

“The protected estate directive activated through incapacity as well as death. The public will may be challenged, but the trust transfer can remain.”

“Did Pearl intend to return?”

“I don’t know.”

A federal trace located Claire’s call inside an old Harrow Media broadcast station.

Agents entered.

The building was empty.

A live monitor displayed Pearl sitting in a chair beside Daniel.

Both were alive.

A date marker showed the video had been recorded that morning.

Pearl spoke directly to Jade.

“Do not come looking for us until the third file opens.”

Daniel leaned toward the camera.

“And do not trust the person who brings it.”

The screen went black.

Seconds later, a courier arrived at Leonard’s office carrying a third sealed estate folder.

The courier was Travis Harrow.

👉 Leonard’s hidden Price identity complicated every alliance, while Travis arrived carrying the third file that Pearl warned Jade not to trust.
