Chapter 13 - VIVIAN’S DAUGHTERMiranda did not deny the record.

Twenty-eight years earlier, Vivian became pregnant while working for the Harrow Medical Network. She refused to identify the father.

She planned to place the baby privately and leave the country.

Daniel learned about the pregnancy and asked Miranda to help.

Miranda had recently suffered a miscarriage.

The family arranged a confidential transfer.

Miranda carried Jade home from the hospital and raised her as her own.

“Did Vivian want me?” Jade asked.

“She signed the surrender,” Miranda said.

“Was she informed?”

Pearl answered.

“Not completely.”

The private adoption protected Vivian from a powerful man connected to the Price family. Pearl believed secrecy kept both mother and child safe.

Again.

Safety without informed consent.

Jade looked toward Daniel.

“You knew Vivian was my biological mother.”

“Yes.”

“And you married Miranda afterward?”

“We were already together.”

“Did you adopt me?”

“Yes.”

Daniel was her legal father by choice.

The boating conspiracy later turned biological mother, adoptive mother, and father against one another.

Vivian’s resentment toward Jade was not simply about the foundation.

Jade’s existence represented the child she surrendered and later regretted losing.

“She could have contacted me,” Jade said.

Pearl looked down.

“I prevented it.”

“You decided Miranda was the better mother.”

“At the time.”

Miranda laughed bitterly.

“Pearl gave me a child, then judged every way I raised her.”

“You isolated Jade from me.”

“Because you never stopped acting like she belonged to you.”

Jade stood between them.

“I did not belong to either of you.”

The words ended the argument.

Federal investigators reopened Vivian’s medical records.

The father’s identity had been sealed by Judge Price.

Leonard obtained an independent order.

The name appeared.

Arthur Harrow.

Miranda’s father.

The room became silent.

Arthur had assaulted or exploited Vivian when she was young and economically dependent on the family.

Jade was his biological daughter.

Miranda had raised her own half-sister as a child.

The truth explained the secrecy but not the choices made afterward.

Pearl hid the birth to protect Vivian from scandal and Arthur’s control. Miranda agreed to raise Jade partly from love and partly because exposing the truth would destroy the Harrow family name.

Daniel adopted Jade knowing the risk.

Vivian later learned Arthur had left a hidden inheritance to any biological child born outside his marriage.

The inheritance included voting rights in the medical network.

Jade possessed another claim no one had disclosed.

Vivian’s plan was not only revenge.

She believed Jade’s existence had enriched Miranda while leaving her with nothing.

“She sees me as stolen property,” Jade said.

Pearl closed her eyes.

“Yes.”

A message arrived from Vivian.

Now you know why Pearl chose which mother deserved you. Ask whether Miranda loved you before or after she saw Arthur’s trust.

Miranda looked devastated.

Jade asked directly.

“Did you know about the trust when you took me?”

“No.”

Pearl confirmed Arthur’s hidden will surfaced years later.

Miranda’s love had begun before money.

Her abuse and control came later.

Complexity did not restore the relationship, but it prevented Vivian’s message from defining the whole truth.

The hidden inheritance remained unclaimed.

Jade directed it into the independent victim foundation pending legal review.

She refused to enrich herself through Arthur’s violence.

Vivian responded by releasing documents alleging Pearl bribed the adoption judge.

The allegation was true.

Pearl had used money and influence to seal Jade’s records.

She called it protection.

The court called it possible fraud.

Pearl agreed to testify.

No one remained above consequence.

Then Agent Rachel traced Vivian’s message to the Harrow estate mausoleum.

Investigators entered.

Vivian was gone.

Inside Arthur’s crypt lay a recent photograph of Jade sleeping inside her apartment.

Vivian had been watching her.

A note beneath it read:

I did not give you away. Pearl took you before I woke up.

Miranda stared at Pearl.

“You said Vivian signed.”

Pearl’s face changed.

“The signature was witnessed.”

“By whom?”

Leonard opened the adoption file.

The witness was Nurse Evelyn Brooks.

Evelyn would have been only fourteen years old at the time.

The signature could not be genuine.

👉 Jade learned she was born from Arthur Harrow’s abuse and raised by her half-sister, while the impossible witness signature suggested Vivian’s adoption surrender had been forged.
