Chapter 14 - THE SIGNATURE PEARL BOUGHTNurse Evelyn’s full name was Evelyn Brooks Price.

She was Judge Roland Price’s daughter.

At fourteen, she lived near the private hospital where Vivian delivered Jade.

Her signature appeared on the adoption surrender because her father used her identity to validate sealed documents.

Evelyn claimed she never knew.

Handwriting experts found the signature had been copied from a school registration form.

Vivian had not surrendered Jade legally.

Pearl arranged the transfer through Judge Price after Arthur threatened to claim the child.

Miranda accepted the baby believing Vivian consented.

Daniel suspected the paperwork was irregular but did not investigate.

Every adult chose the version that allowed the arrangement to continue.

Pearl faced Jade inside the conference room where the story began.

The returned letters still rested in evidence bags.

“I believed Arthur would raise you as leverage,” Pearl said.

“So you took me from Vivian.”

“I took you from danger.”

“You did not ask her.”

“She was sedated.”

“You could have waited.”

“Arthur’s attorney was already at the hospital.”

“You still made the choice.”

Pearl’s voice broke.

“Yes.”

The woman who documented Miranda’s isolation had once isolated another mother from her child.

The parallel was impossible to ignore.

Miranda looked at Pearl.

“You taught me.”

Pearl did not argue.

Vivian’s crimes remained her own. She helped target Daniel, joined the Price network, kidnapped Pearl, and attempted to kill Jade inside the archive.

Her victimization did not erase later harm.

But the original loss had been real.

Jade requested an independent mediator to contact Vivian.

No immunity.

No private payment.

Only a chance to surrender and tell the full truth.

Vivian replied with coordinates to a rural church in Vermont.

Jade did not go alone despite the demand.

Federal agents surrounded the property discreetly.

Inside, Vivian waited beside an old baptismal register.

She looked at Jade with an intensity that felt uncomfortably familiar.

“They gave you my eyes,” she said.

“I already had them.”

Vivian smiled sadly.

“You sound like Pearl.”

“I sound like myself.”

Jade placed the forged surrender document on the pew.

“I know you did not consent.”

Vivian’s face collapsed.

For one second, she was not the strategist who manipulated families and stole evidence.

She was a young woman waking to find her child gone.

Then control returned.

“Come with me,” she said. “We can take Arthur’s trust and destroy all of them.”

“No.”

“I am your mother.”

“You gave birth to me. Relationship requires more than biology.”

The words Claire might say? No, within this story Jade has learned this principle. Fine.

Vivian’s anger sharpened.

“Miranda threatened you.”

“Yes.”

“Pearl stole you.”

“Yes.”

“Daniel abandoned you.”

“Yes.”

“And you still choose them?”

“I am not choosing them over you. I am choosing not to become your weapon.”

Vivian reached beneath the baptismal register.

Agents raised their weapons.

She removed a smartphone, not a gun.

The screen showed Travis inside a car with Celeste Morgan.

They held Nurse Evelyn’s husband hostage.

Vivian had brought evidence proving Travis still controlled part of the network.

“If I surrender, they kill him.”

Jade asked Agent Rachel to begin a rescue operation.

Vivian expected Jade to trade the foundation for one life.

Jade refused the false choice.

She offered protected cooperation.

Vivian hesitated.

Then the church windows shattered.

A shot struck the pew.

Agents pulled Jade down.

Vivian ran through the sacristy.

The shooter escaped.

Outside, police found a discarded rifle registered to Travis.

The hostage video was traced to a warehouse.

Evelyn’s husband was rescued alive.

Celeste escaped.

Travis disappeared.

Vivian left behind the baptismal register.

Inside was Arthur Harrow’s hidden confession.

He admitted fathering another child before Jade.

A son raised under a Price family identity.

The name had been removed.

But the current profession remained visible.

Estate attorney.

Jade looked toward Leonard Hale.

Arthur Harrow may have been his biological father.

That would make Leonard Jade’s half-brother.

Pearl had chosen him to control the will reading without revealing the relationship.

Once again, the lawyer’s neutrality had been built around blood.

👉 Vivian refused surrender and escaped another assassination attempt, while Arthur’s confession suggested Leonard was Jade’s hidden brother and another heir to the estate.
