Chapter 6 - THE NIGHT PEARL DIEDNurse Evelyn agreed to a second interview only after receiving federal protection.
She sat across from Jade inside a secure hospital office, twisting her wedding ring.
“Pearl did not die at 11:42 p.m.,” she said.
The death certificate listed that exact time.
“When did she die?” Jade asked.
“I don’t know.”
Evelyn explained that Pearl suffered a sudden breathing crisis at 9:10. Miranda ordered staff to honor a do-not-resuscitate directive.
The directive appeared valid.
Pearl had never signed it.
“I knew the signature looked wrong,” Evelyn admitted.
“You still followed it.”
“Travis was filming. He said if I intervened, they would accuse me of assaulting an elderly patient.”
Jade felt anger harden.
“You had a medical duty.”
“Yes.”
Evelyn called the hospice physician privately. Before he arrived, Travis removed Pearl from the room on a transport stretcher.
“He said she was being transferred for emergency imaging.”
“She was supposedly under a DNR.”
“I know.”
Miranda remained behind and ordered Evelyn to prepare the room as though Pearl had died there.
At 11:42, a covered body was returned.
The physician pronounced death without uncovering the face because Miranda claimed Pearl’s condition had become visually traumatic.
The funeral home collected the body forty minutes later.
“Did you verify it was Pearl?”
“No.”
Jade stood.
Every adult in the final hours had accepted instruction over certainty.
Evelyn continued.
Before the crisis, Pearl asked her to hide Leonard’s biometric card inside the glass-of-water tray. Travis found it.
“That is how he withdrew Daniel’s money.”
“Why did Pearl have Leonard’s card?”
“She asked him to leave it as part of an emergency plan.”
Leonard confirmed Pearl wanted the card available if Miranda tried to seize the trust server.
He did not know Travis took it.
Jade requested the hospice security footage.
The hallway camera had been disabled for four hours.
A parking camera remained active.
It showed a private ambulance leaving at 9:24.
The company logo belonged to Harrow Medical Transport, a Travis subsidiary.
The vehicle returned at 11:31 carrying a body bag.
The original patient never returned visibly.
Pearl may have been alive when she left.
Or Travis removed the body to alter evidence.
The ambulance GPS log had been erased.
Owen recovered one destination from a fuel-card receipt.
Saint Rowan Private Clinic.
The clinic closed permanently the morning after Pearl’s death.
Its medical director was Dr. Roland Price, brother of Judge Roland Price.
The same family connected to Daniel’s accident and Pearl’s blocked patient advocate.
Jade searched Pearl’s handwritten cards for Saint Rowan references.
One card contained a sketch of a white bridge and the words:
When the river carries me away, follow the woman wearing my pearls.
Miranda wore Pearl’s famous triple-strand necklace at the funeral.
Jade remembered thinking it cruel.
Now the necklace might be evidence.
Pearl had designed the strands with tiny hollow clasps used to store emergency contact information.
Miranda claimed she lost the necklace after the funeral.
Travis’s insurance records showed it had been appraised two days later in Boston.
The appraiser provided a photograph.
Inside the open clasp was a micro-storage chip.
Someone removed it before returning the necklace.
The appraiser remembered the client.
A gray-haired man using the name Daniel Hale.
The photograph from the store showed Jade’s father.
Daniel had handled Pearl’s necklace after her reported death.
He was alive in Boston.
Then another image appeared.
Miranda entered the same jewelry store twelve minutes later.
