Chapter 1 - The Final Slice of CakeRuby Mason was six years old when a final bite of chocolate raspberry cake nearly cost her life.

She sat at the wooden kitchen table wearing the yellow dress her mother had bought for the family dinner. A sunflower bracelet circled her wrist, and a matching yellow clip held back one side of her dark hair. Chocolate frosting marked the corner of her mouth as she carefully scraped the last crumbs from a dessert plate.
The cake had been placed in the refrigerator after dinner.
Ruby had asked her grandmother whether she could have the final slice.
Eleanor Mason had waved toward the kitchen without looking up from her phone.
“Go ahead, sweetheart.”
Ruby believed permission from an adult was enough.
Then Vanessa entered.
Hannah Mason’s older sister stopped beside the refrigerator and stared at the empty shelf. Vanessa had been saving that slice for herself. She had mentioned it twice during dinner, but Ruby had not heard her.
Vanessa turned toward the child.
Her face changed with terrifying speed.
“You little thief.”
Ruby’s spoon slipped from her fingers.
“I’m sorry, Aunt Vanessa. Grandma said—”
Vanessa crossed the kitchen before Hannah could reach them.
She seized Ruby by the shoulders and forced her toward the table.
The plate shattered.
Ruby collapsed beside the chair, her small body completely still.
For one impossible second, nobody moved.
Then Hannah screamed.
She lunged toward her daughter, but Eleanor caught her from behind. The older woman locked both arms around Hannah’s chest while Frank Mason, Hannah’s father, stepped into her path.
“Let me go!” Hannah fought so violently that one of Eleanor’s pearl earrings fell to the floor. “Ruby! Baby, look at me!”
Vanessa stood near the broken plate, breathing hard.
The rage was already leaving her face.
Fear replaced it.
Eleanor tightened her grip.
“Don’t touch her. Let Vanessa calm down.”
Hannah turned her head toward her mother in disbelief.
“My daughter isn’t moving!”
“She probably fainted.”
“She hit her head!”
Frank lifted both hands.
“No one needs police in this house.”
That sentence changed Hannah’s panic into something sharper.
She tore one arm free, reached across the counter, and grabbed her smartphone.
Vanessa rushed toward her.
Frank stopped his older daughter, but only after Hannah had already reached emergency services.
“My six-year-old daughter is unconscious,” Hannah gasped. “My sister grabbed her and slammed her into the table.”
Vanessa stared at her.
“You’re destroying this family.”
Hannah knelt beside Ruby without moving her neck. Blood did not cover the child’s face, but swelling had already begun near one eye.
“No,” Hannah whispered. “You did that.”
Paramedic Olivia Reed arrived with two responders less than seven minutes later. She knelt beside Ruby, checked her pupils, and immediately ordered spinal precautions.
Ruby did not respond when Olivia called her name.
One responder moved Vanessa and the grandparents away. Eleanor protested that everything had been misunderstood.
“She fell,” Eleanor said.
Hannah looked directly at the paramedic.
“My sister grabbed her and slammed her into the table.”
Olivia’s expression hardened.
She signaled another responder to contact police.
Vanessa’s face went pale.
At the hospital, Ruby regained consciousness briefly. She could not open her swollen eye. She clutched a stuffed rabbit against her chest while Hannah stood beside the bed, holding her hand.
Eleanor, Frank, and Vanessa arrived together.
They sat across the room as though they had already agreed on a story.
The ER doctor, Michael Grant, entered with medical scans. He placed them on the overbed table beside evidence bags containing Ruby’s sunflower bracelet and yellow hair clip.
“These injuries do not match a fall.”
Frank began to speak.
The hospital door opened.
Detective Daniel Cross entered carrying a sealed folder and a tablet. He placed the device on the table.
The frozen image showed Vanessa standing behind Ruby in the kitchen.
Before anyone lies, Daniel said, you should know the kitchen recorded everything.
Vanessa’s lips parted.
Eleanor lowered her eyes.
Frank’s explanation died in his throat.
Hannah drew Ruby closer.
She expected the recording to prove what she had witnessed.
She did not yet know the camera had recorded what happened before dinner too.
Detective Cross tapped the screen.
“There are six hours of footage,” he said. “And your sister wasn’t the first person who threatened Ruby today.”
Hannah slowly turned toward her parents.

Eleanor’s face had gone completely white.
👉 The camera captured Vanessa’s assault, but the earlier footage showed Ruby discovering something the entire Mason family was desperate to hide.
