Chapter 5 - The Woman Missing from the RecordingThe security footage showed no unfamiliar woman entering the kitchen.

Detective Cross reviewed every camera.
Front door.
Back patio.
Garage.
Hallway.
No one matching Ruby’s description appeared.
But the kitchen system contained a seventeen-minute gap beginning at 3:06 p.m.
The feed did not fail.
Someone with administrator access deleted the segment.
Eleanor, Frank, Vanessa, Hannah, and Caleb possessed access credentials.
Hannah had been at work.
Caleb was in Seattle, confirmed through airport security footage.
That left three people inside the house.
Unless someone used their passwords.
Ruby described the woman carefully.
“Gray hair. Red coat. Pretty ring.”
“What kind of ring?” Daniel asked.
“A flower with a V.”
The Vale family emblem was a rose shaped around the letter V.
Noah’s mother, Margaret Vale, supposedly died when he was sixteen.
Her obituary contained no recent photograph. The only image showed a woman in her forties with dark hair.
Peter Vale signed the death certificate.
Daniel requested burial records.
The cemetery plot existed.
The coffin had been placed without public viewing after an alleged contagious illness.
No independent DNA identification had been made.
Margaret might be alive.
Peter Vale had used false deaths more than once.
Noah’s staged death followed a family pattern.
Daniel traced St. Matthew’s Rehabilitation Center locations.
There were fourteen facilities with similar names across three states.
Only one used room numbers beginning with three hundred and treated long-term neurological injuries.
It stood four hours away in rural Virginia.
A patient registered as Curtis Lane occupied Room 318.
He had been admitted six years earlier after a vehicle fire.
Hannah stared at the admission date.
Two weeks after Noah disappeared.
Daniel arranged federal support before approaching the facility.
Hannah could not leave Ruby before surgery, so she waited in the hospital while Daniel traveled.
At noon, Ruby was taken into the operating room.
Hannah watched the doors close.
Eleanor sat under guard farther down the corridor after requesting to see her granddaughter.
Hannah had refused.
Eleanor approached anyway.
“I need to tell you something before the police find him.”
“Who?”
“Noah.”
“You knew where he was.”
“I knew Peter kept someone alive.”
“That is not the same as knowing?”
Eleanor’s lips trembled.
“I visited St. Matthew’s once. The man in Room 318 didn’t remember me.”
“Why was he there?”
“Peter said Noah tried to expose the trust and caused the crash himself.”
“Did you believe him?”
“I believed what allowed me to keep both daughters.”
Hannah laughed bitterly.
“You protected Vanessa by sacrificing me.”
“I thought Noah had used both of you.”
“He did. But Ruby didn’t use anyone.”
Eleanor looked toward the surgery doors.
“I never wanted her hurt.”
“You held me while Vanessa attacked her.”
“I panicked.”
“You chose.”
The distinction followed every revelation.
Eleanor finally admitted the erased kitchen footage showed Margaret Vale.
She entered through a hidden basement passage connected to the neighboring property, once owned by the Vale family.
The Mason house had belonged to Peter before Frank purchased it at a suspiciously low price.
A concealed door behind the pantry led into an old service tunnel.
Margaret used it to enter unseen.
She gave Ruby the bracelet and told her Noah never abandoned her willingly.
Then Eleanor arrived.
Margaret threatened to expose the surrogacy fraud.
Eleanor deleted the footage after she left.
“Where did Margaret go?”
“I don’t know.”
“What was in the envelope you took from the bank?”
“A photograph of Peter standing beside Noah’s hospital bed. The date was last month.”
Eleanor gave it to Vanessa because she believed Vanessa could persuade Peter to release him.
Instead, Vanessa destroyed part of the address.
Hannah looked at her mother.
“Why?”
“Vanessa still loves him.”
“Love did not stop her from trying to take his child.”
Eleanor began crying.
Hannah felt nothing strong enough to become comfort.
Daniel called from Virginia.
Room 318 was empty.
The patient had been transferred that morning.
The facility director produced a signed request from Hannah Mason authorizing the move.
Another forged signature.
Destination:
Mason Family Residence.
Hannah looked toward Eleanor.
Noah had been transferred to her parents’ house while everyone was at the hospital.
Then the hospital fire alarm sounded.
Staff moved quickly.
Hannah feared Ruby’s surgery had been interrupted.
A nurse assured her the operating rooms were secure.
Daniel’s voice returned through the phone.
“Get away from the windows.”
A rifle shot shattered the corridor glass.
Eleanor dropped.
Hannah threw herself behind the nurses’ station.
The bullet had struck the wall beside Eleanor’s head.
Someone was not trying to kill Hannah.

They were warning her mother to remain silent.
👉 Noah vanished from the rehabilitation center under Hannah’s forged authority, while a gunshot inside the hospital proved Peter Vale’s network was willing to silence anyone exposing the family trust.
