Frank finally agreed to speak.
He had spent the night insisting Vanessa acted alone and Ruby’s injury was accidental. The shooting changed his calculation.
Daniel interviewed him inside a guarded hospital conference room.
Hannah watched through one-way glass.
Frank appeared smaller than the man who had blocked her from reaching Ruby.
“I made a mistake,” he said.
Daniel placed photographs of the kitchen, forged contract, bank box, and rehabilitation facility on the table.
“You made many.”
Frank admitted meeting Peter Vale thirty-seven years earlier. They worked together at a regional hospital.
Eleanor became pregnant with Vanessa while Frank was deeply in debt.
Peter offered financial help in exchange for access to hospital billing accounts. Frank agreed.
Years later, Peter arranged Vanessa’s marriage to Noah.

Frank and Eleanor objected initially.

“You sold my pregnancy,” Hannah whispered behind the glass.
Frank could not hear her.
Daniel asked whether Hannah agreed to any arrangement.
“No.”
“Did you forge her signature?”
“Peter’s office prepared it.”
“Did you sign as witness?”
“Yes.”

“We thought she would understand later.”
Daniel’s expression hardened.
“You planned to remove a newborn from her mother and expected gratitude?”
Frank looked down.
Noah changed the plan after Ruby’s birth. He refused to surrender the baby. He threatened to expose Peter.
Peter staged Noah’s accident and placed him inside St. Matthew’s under heavy medication.
Vanessa knew Noah survived for the first year.
Then Peter claimed he died from complications.
“Did she believe him?” Daniel asked.
“I don’t know.”
Frank admitted the family maintained the guardianship plan because the trust remained valuable.
Vanessa’s life insurance payment came from Peter, not a legitimate policy.
It purchased her silence.
The grandparents received the house and retirement accounts.
Everyone profited while Hannah raised Ruby without support.
Daniel asked about Margaret Vale.
Frank became pale.
“She was supposed to be dead.”
“Many people in this family were.”
Margaret founded Vale Medical Logistics with her husband. Peter, her younger brother, wanted control. When she discovered billing fraud and illegal patient transfers, Peter staged her death and confined her in another facility.
She escaped three years earlier.
Since then, she had been dismantling Peter’s network quietly.
She may have sent the bracelet.
She may also have arranged Noah’s transfer.
“Why move him to your house?” Daniel asked.
Frank looked confused.
“I didn’t.”
A tactical team entered the Mason home.
The hidden basement passage stood open.
They found medical supplies, a wheelchair, and fresh blood on a blanket.
Noah had been there.
Someone moved him again.
On the kitchen wall, Margaret left a message written with red lipstick:

Daniel asked Frank what it meant.
He refused to answer.
The detective placed DNA documents from the hospital’s family files on the table.
Ruby’s emergency blood testing had triggered an unusual match.
Her genetic profile shared a close relationship with Vanessa beyond ordinary aunt and niece.
The probability suggested Vanessa might be Ruby’s biological mother.
Hannah nearly stopped breathing.

Daniel joined her behind the glass.

Ruby was conceived naturally, as far as Hannah knew. She carried the pregnancy and gave birth.
Vanessa could not be the biological mother unless eggs had been used without Hannah’s knowledge.
Hannah remembered a medical procedure months before meeting Noah. Peter Vale’s fertility clinic treated her for ovarian cysts after Eleanor insisted on a specialist.

Hannah looked at her sister.
“Did you know from the beginning?”
Vanessa’s smile disappeared.
“I knew an embryo was created.”
“Did you know it was placed inside me?”
“No. Noah was supposed to hire a surrogate.”
“Then why did you treat me like I stole her?”
“Because you got everything.”
Hannah stared.
“I got abandoned, lied to, and threatened.”
“You got to hear her call you Mom.”
The envy beneath Vanessa’s rage was almost bottomless.
A hospital technician delivered the preliminary result.
Ruby’s mitochondrial DNA matched Vanessa.
But half her broader maternal profile matched Hannah too.
The doctor looked confused.
“Ruby appears biologically related to both sisters as mothers.”
A rare medical possibility existed.
An embryo created from Vanessa’s egg may have incorporated cells from Hannah during pregnancy.
