Chapter 2 - The Conversation Before DinnerDetective Cross asked everyone except Hannah to leave Ruby’s hospital room.
Vanessa refused at first.
“I’m her aunt.”
“You are also the person recorded assaulting her,” Daniel replied. “An officer is waiting outside.”
Eleanor stood abruptly.
“My daughter did not mean to hurt anyone.”
Daniel looked at her.
“Which daughter?”
The question silenced her.
Vanessa was escorted into a separate interview room. Frank followed under protest. Eleanor remained near the doorway until Hannah told her to leave.
“Go.”
“Hannah, please listen to me.”
“I listened when you told me not to touch my unconscious child.”
Eleanor’s face crumpled.
“You don’t understand what Vanessa has been through.”
“And Ruby does?”
The older woman left.
Daniel pulled a visitor chair closer to Hannah. He lowered his voice so Ruby, drifting beneath medication, would not hear every detail.
“The security system stores audio?”
“Yes. My father installed it after someone broke into the garage.”
“Who has access?”
“My parents. Vanessa. Me.”
“Anyone else?”
“My brother, Caleb, but he lives in Seattle.”
Daniel opened the earliest recording from that afternoon.
At 2:17 p.m., Ruby entered the empty kitchen wearing jeans and a red sweater. She had come home from school and placed her backpack near the table.
Eleanor stood near the counter speaking quietly on the phone.
“You promised the adoption records were gone,” she said.
Hannah stopped breathing.
On the recording, Eleanor listened before answering.
“No, Hannah still believes Ruby’s father signed everything voluntarily.”
Hannah gripped the side of the hospital bed.
Ruby’s biological father, Noah Bennett, had disappeared before she gave birth. Hannah received legal papers through an attorney claiming he surrendered parental rights and wanted no contact.
The papers were painful but clear.
She had raised Ruby alone.
“What adoption records?” Hannah whispered.
Daniel continued the footage.
Eleanor lowered her voice.
“If Hannah finds out who Vanessa’s husband really was, she’ll take Ruby and never come back.”
Vanessa had been married briefly to a man named Curtis Vale. He died in a workplace accident seven years earlier.
Ruby was six.
The timing felt uncomfortably close.
Ruby stepped into the kitchen before Eleanor finished the call.
“Grandma, who’s my dad?”
Eleanor dropped her phone.
She crossed the room and grabbed Ruby’s wrist.
“You were listening?”
“I wanted juice.”
“You do not repeat adult conversations.”
Ruby began to cry.
The sunflower bracelet was visible on her wrist.
Eleanor looked directly at it and froze.
Then she said something barely audible.
“That bracelet should have been destroyed.”
Hannah touched the evidence bag containing it.
The bracelet had arrived anonymously on Ruby’s sixth birthday. A small note read:
For the little sunflower. Your father never forgot you.
Hannah believed the sender might be one of Noah’s relatives, but she had never been able to trace it.
On the video, Eleanor removed the bracelet from Ruby’s wrist and placed it inside a kitchen drawer.
Ruby begged for it back.
Frank entered and demanded to know what happened.
When Eleanor explained, he looked toward the security camera.
“Delete this.”
He climbed onto a chair and unplugged the camera.
But the device had already uploaded the recording to cloud storage.
Twenty minutes later, Frank called Vanessa.
“She heard too much,” he said.
Vanessa arrived early for dinner.
The next clip showed the sisters’ parents meeting her in the pantry.
Frank warned Vanessa that Ruby had heard part of the adoption conversation.
Vanessa’s response was immediate.
“Then Hannah can never know Curtis was Noah Bennett.”
Hannah stood so quickly that the chair fell behind her.
“No.”
Daniel paused the footage.
“Did you know Curtis had another name?”
“No. Curtis was Vanessa’s husband. Noah was Ruby’s father. They weren’t the same man.”
“Your sister appears to believe they were.”
Hannah remembered Noah refusing photographs during the short relationship. He said his family had enemies and he valued privacy. He traveled often. When she became pregnant, he seemed frightened rather than joyful.
Then he disappeared.
Two months later, Vanessa announced Curtis had died in a factory explosion out of state. Hannah had never met him because Vanessa claimed he worked overseas during most of their marriage.
The family had discouraged questions.
Daniel continued the clip.
Eleanor said, “If Hannah learns Ruby belongs to Vanessa too, we lose everything.”
Hannah stared at the screen.
“How could my daughter belong to Vanessa?”
Daniel did not answer.
On the footage, Vanessa looked directly toward the camera Eleanor believed was disconnected.
“She was supposed to be my child.”
The sentence remained in the kitchen air.
Hannah felt as if the hospital floor had opened.
Ruby moved weakly in the bed.
“Mom?”
Hannah immediately returned to her side.
“I’m here.”
Ruby’s good eye opened slightly.
“Aunt Vanessa said Daddy promised me to her.”
Daniel and Hannah exchanged a look.
“What else did she say?” Hannah asked.
Ruby’s lips trembled.

👉 Vanessa’s attack may have begun with the missing cake, but the camera revealed she believed Ruby had been promised to her before Hannah ever knew she was pregnant.
