The recording had been made afterward.
“I survived,” she said.
Daniel closed his eyes.
Amy stood beside Lily’s bed without moving.
Evelyn explained that Amy carried her from the burning house through the rear garden. Samuel had arrived before firefighters and attempted to recover the cardinal.
Evelyn refused to surrender it.
Dean struck her.
Amy drove them away.
For nine months, Evelyn lived under a protected identity while preparing to testify against Brightwell.
Then someone inside the federal team betrayed her location.
“Where is she now?” Daniel asked.
Amy’s eyes filled with tears.
“I don’t know.”
Evelyn disappeared from the safe house. Blood was found, but no body.
Amy remained hidden because Samuel threatened Olivia and every child in the registry.
She worked inside Brightwell under false identities, moving evidence and sometimes helping children escape.
She also committed crimes for the network to preserve her access.
“I removed the heat wrap,” Amy admitted.
“You erased evidence,” Daniel said.
“I removed the beacon Dean placed inside it. The device would have led him to the registry.”
“You could have called police.”
“Dean controlled police.”
“Nora doesn’t.”
“I didn’t know who had been compromised.”
Daniel looked toward Lily’s bandages.
“Did you know they would burn her?”
“No.”
“Did you know they were conditioning her?”
“Yes.”
The answer carried its own guilt.
Amy believed she could protect Lily from within, just as Olivia believed careful documentation protected patients.
Neither stopped the first injury.
Lily touched the wooden cardinal.
It opened with a small click.
Inside was a memory card and a tiny paper strip containing four numbers.
Lily stared at them.
“Grandma said not to say them until the camera turned red.”
The visible camera light was dark.
Olivia’s independent lens, hidden in the smoke detector, flashed red once.
Lily whispered the code to Daniel.
The trust accepted it.
A countdown began.
Nine days became nine minutes.
Evelyn had modified the release after the fire. If Lily remembered voluntarily in a protected medical setting, the archive would transmit immediately rather than waiting for her birthday.
Samuel’s network began attacking the hospital servers.
Nora ordered the room disconnected from the main system.
The archive continued through the cardinal’s satellite transmitter.
Amy opened the second compartment.
It contained photographs of judges, doctors, officers, and foster guardians.
Officer Mercer.
Judge Crane.
Dr. Voss.
Samuel.
Kate.
Rachel appeared in one older photograph.
She was fourteen and wearing a Brightwell wristband.
Rachel had been a subject before becoming Lily’s mother.
Samuel later placed her near Daniel as a potential spouse.
Kate was introduced only after Rachel’s marriage failed.
Daniel stared at Amy.
“They selected both women?”
“Yes.”
“Did Rachel know?”
“Not consciously.”
Brightwell used old trauma triggers to manipulate former subjects. Kate exploited them to convince Rachel that helping frame Daniel would protect Lily.
Rachel was responsible for her choices.
She had also been targeted years before she made them.
The archive reached sixty percent.
Then the cardinal’s signal failed.
A message replaced the progress screen:
Founder override accepted.
Samuel possessed a cancellation code.
Only Evelyn should have known it.
Amy looked at Daniel.
“He got it from her.”
“Then she’s alive.”
A video opened.
Evelyn sat inside a dark medical room.
She looked older, exhausted, and unmistakably alive.
Samuel stood behind her.
He held Rachel by one arm.
Dean held Kate beside him.
