Chapter 15 - The Child Behind the Second CurtainGrace had been admitted after collapsing during a school trip.

Her adoptive parents knew her as Hannah Cole. They had no idea Brightwell had used a false surrender document during the adoption.
Doctors placed her in a private pediatric room while investigators verified the connection.
Daniel did not enter.
He stood behind the observation window and watched the seven-year-old sleep.
She had Lily’s dark eyes and his habit of curling one hand beneath her cheek.
“She doesn’t know me,” he said.
Lauren stood beside him.
“Then her first memory of you should not be a stranger claiming her.”
Daniel nodded.
He had spent the entire night fighting adults who believed biological connection created immediate ownership.
He would not become one of them.
Grace’s adoptive parents arrived frightened and defensive. Daniel told them he did not intend to remove her without investigation, preparation, and the child’s consent.
The mother began crying.
“We didn’t know.”
“Neither did I.”
Their ignorance did not resolve the legal conflict.
It created another family Brightwell had built on fraud.
Across the corridor, Lily slept beside Evelyn while Olivia checked the IV line.
Kate remained under guard in another section of the hospital. She had requested to speak with Daniel and Lily.
Daniel refused access to Lily.
He agreed to record Kate’s statement.
Kate admitted placing the heated wrap around Lily’s shoulders.
“I believed pain would restore the fire memory.”
“You could have stopped.”
“Yes.”
“You increased the temperature.”
“No. Dean did.”
“You held her.”
“Yes.”
“You accused me afterward.”
“Samuel said he would kill Grace if I refused.”
Daniel stared at her.
“You knew where my daughter was.”
“I monitored her first placement.”
“And you married me without telling me.”
“Yes.”
“Did you ever intend to bring her home?”
Kate’s tears fell.
“I told myself I would after I destroyed Brightwell.”
“But you helped Brightwell burn Lily.”
“Yes.”
There was no sentence capable of making those choices clean.
Kate revealed that Eleanor Harper had worked inside the hospital for months using temporary nursing identities. Her final assignment was to move Grace before the archive released.
“Is Eleanor loyal to Samuel?” Nora asked.
“No. She believes Evelyn betrayed her.”
“Then why help him?”
“Because he has her daughter.”
Eleanor had a child inside Brightwell’s original facility.
Another generation held as leverage.
The network survived by ensuring every potential whistleblower had someone younger to lose.
A security alert interrupted the interview.
Grace’s room camera had gone dark.
Daniel ran toward the pediatric wing.
The adoptive parents stood outside the room with an unconscious security officer. The privacy curtain around Grace’s bed was closed.
Daniel pulled it aside.
The bed was empty.
A hospital wristband lay on the pillow.
Grace Harper.
Beside it sat the carved red cardinal.
Amy had been carrying it moments earlier.
Daniel looked toward Lily’s protected room.
Amy was gone too.
The ceiling speaker activated.
Eleanor’s voice filled both pediatric rooms.
“Daniel, Grace was never admitted because she collapsed.”
He looked toward the camera.
“Why was she brought here?”
“To exchange her.”
“For whom?”
A live video appeared.
Amy stood inside the abandoned Brightwell maternity wing with Grace beside her.
Neither appeared restrained.
Samuel stood several feet away.
Behind him was a hospital bed surrounded by monitors.
A woman lay beneath the blanket.
Daniel recognized Rachel.
Then another child stepped into view.
She looked almost exactly like Lily.
Same age.
Same hair.
Same frightened eyes.
Daniel stopped breathing.
Samuel placed one hand on the second girl’s shoulder.
“Brightwell never built one witness into the Harper family,” he said.
“It built two.”
Lily came into the corridor wrapped in a blanket.
She stared at the screen.
“Daddy…”
The second girl raised her face.
“Lily?” she whispered.
Samuel smiled.
“The child in your hospital remembers the fire.”
He looked down at the girl beside him.
“But this one remembers what happened before it.”
The duplicate child held up a photograph of Daniel carrying an infant from a Brightwell nursery six years earlier.
Daniel had no memory of the event.
Evelyn saw the image and went pale.
“Daniel, don’t listen to him.”
Samuel turned toward her camera.
“Tell him, Evelyn.”
Daniel looked at the mother who had raised him.
“Tell me what?”
Evelyn gripped the bed rail.
The girl beside Samuel began crying.
Then Lily whispered the name Brightwell had forced her to forget.
“Rose.”
Every hospital lock clicked open simultaneously.
Officer Mercer’s voice came through Daniel’s phone.
“Now ask which girl Kate burned.”
The screen went black before Chloe—no, Lily—could reveal the rest.
