Chapter 6 - Brightwell’s FounderSamuel Mercer looked like a physician trusted by frightened parents.
Silver hair. Calm voice. Expensive coat. No visible anger.
He stood in the hospital lobby with two private medical workers and a lawyer carrying Lily’s transfer order.
“This child requires stabilization away from competing parental influence,” he said.
Detective Blake held up the injury report.
“She requires protection from the people who burned her.”
Samuel’s eyes moved toward Daniel.
“Mr. Harper has a history of emotional volatility.”
“He was not present during the injury.”
“Violence can be arranged.”
“The device carries your children’s fingerprints.”
Samuel did not react.
“Improperly collected evidence can create dangerous assumptions.”
Olivia joined Nora at the lobby entrance.
“Where is Amy Bennett?”
For the first time, Samuel’s composure shifted.
“I don’t know that name.”
“You treated her eighteen years ago.”
“I have treated thousands of children.”
“She disappeared from your facility.”
“Then direct questions to the authorities who investigated.”
“The officer was Dean Mercer.”
Samuel looked toward Olivia’s badge.
“Your personal grief is contaminating your judgment.”
It was Brightwell language—turn the witness into the unstable party.
Olivia did not move.
“My judgment recognized a false timestamp before your order took Lily.”
Samuel’s lawyer threatened the hospital with contempt proceedings. Nora contacted the state attorney general and obtained a temporary stay.
The transport team withdrew.
Samuel remained long enough to look through the glass at Lily.
She saw him.
Her heart monitor accelerated.
“He was at Grandma’s house,” she whispered.
Daniel knelt beside the bed.
“During the fire?”
Lily nodded.
“He said the smoke would make me forget.”
The fire report listed no Samuel Mercer.
Evelyn was found near the rear staircase. Investigators concluded faulty wiring trapped her upstairs.
Lily had been rescued from a first-floor bedroom by an unknown passerby who disappeared before firefighters collected a statement.
Daniel always believed the rescuer was a stranger.
Lily said it was a woman wearing Olivia’s face.
Olivia closed her eyes.
“Amy.”
The sisters had looked alike as teenagers.
If Amy survived Brightwell, she might be the impersonator who removed the heat wrap from Daniel’s house.
“She saved Lily from the fire,” Olivia said. “Why would she help Kate now?”
Samuel answered from the doorway.
“Because Amy finally understands which family abandoned her.”
Security moved toward him.
He stepped back into the elevator before the temporary order allowed detention.
By the time police reached the ground floor, he had vanished through a connected parking structure.
The Harper trust’s encrypted registry finally opened.
It listed forty-three children moved through Brightwell under altered identities.
Amy Bennett was among them.
Status:
Active field guardian.
Assignment:
Harper household containment.
Olivia stared at the entry.
Her missing sister had been inside Daniel’s family for years.
A second current assignment appeared.
Lily Harper—Memory recovery phase.
Purpose:
Locate Evelyn’s original registry before subject reaches age seven.
Daniel looked toward Lily.
Her birthday was nine days away.
Brightwell believed something would happen when she turned seven.
Then the phone taken from Kate’s consultation room connected to the hospital Wi-Fi.
A prerecorded message played.
Kate appeared inside a dark room.
“Daniel, I did burn her.”
He stopped breathing.
“But I did it because Samuel said Lily would die on her seventh birthday if she didn’t remember where Evelyn hid the second registry.”
