The injuries were painful but not life-threatening. Several narrow marks crossed her shoulder and upper arms beneath the bandages.
“They were caused by sustained contact with a heated object,” Dr. Shah explained. “Not boiling water, not an open flame, and not an accidental kitchen spill.”
Daniel stood near the bed, forcing his hands to remain still.
“What kind of object?”
“Possibly a therapeutic heat wrap or warming pad.”
Kate had purchased a medical heat wrap two months earlier.
She told Daniel it was for her back.
When he questioned the charge, she joked that marriage to him required pain management.
Olivia searched Lily’s chart.
An older emergency visit appeared under another name: Lillian Hayes. The child had been treated at a private clinic six weeks earlier for “minor thermal sensitivity.”
The date matched one of Lily’s Thursday visits to Brightwell.
“This happened before,” Daniel whispered.
Lily heard him.
“Kate said the first time didn’t work.”
Daniel looked toward his daughter.
“What didn’t work, sweetheart?”
“She wanted me to remember the fire.”
“What fire?”
Lily immediately shut down.
Her fingers curled against the blanket, and the monitor quickened.
Dr. Shah stopped the questioning.
Detective Blake interviewed Kate in a consultation room.
Kate denied burning Lily. She claimed Daniel had threatened the child weeks earlier and manipulated the evidence to blame her.
Nora placed the intake timestamp in front of her.
“Why was the accusation submitted from Mercer’s tablet?”
“I don’t know.”
“Why did he tell you to stop talking?”
“He didn’t.”
“The corridor camera recorded it.”
Kate looked toward the mirrored wall.
“Dean was trying to protect Lily.”
“From whom?”
“Daniel.”
“Daniel was not at the house.”
Kate’s expression shifted.
“Not physically.”
She claimed Daniel controlled the smart-home system and could have activated the heating wrap remotely.
The theory sounded absurd until investigators checked the device.
The wrap connected to a phone application.
The registered owner was Daniel Harper.
Daniel had never installed the app.
The account had been created using his email address and a password derived from Lily’s birthday.
The phone that activated the heat came from inside Daniel’s house.
Kate had prepared digital evidence pointing directly at him.
But the device log contained a second command.
The temperature had been manually increased after the remote setting began.
Someone in the room had pressed the control button.
The heat wrap preserved a partial fingerprint.

A second print belonged to Officer Mercer.
Rachel saw the report through the interview-room glass and began sobbing.
“I thought it was makeup.”
Nora turned toward her.
“What did you think was makeup?”
Rachel had agreed to help Kate stage evidence of Daniel’s “anger problem.” Kate promised Lily would be photographed with theatrical bruising, then examined by a family therapist who would recommend temporary custody with Rachel.
“I wanted my daughter back,” Rachel said.
“You already had visitation.”
“Daniel was trying to reduce it.”
“Because you missed six visits.”
“I was sick.”
“You signed a plan to falsely accuse him.”
Rachel looked toward Lily’s room.
“I didn’t know they would hurt her.”
“Who is ‘they’?”
“Kate and Dean.”
Kate stood so fast her chair overturned.
“She’s lying!”
Rachel covered her ears.
Nora lowered her voice.
“Why would Mercer help Kate?”
Rachel whispered, “Because Brightwell paid him.”
Daniel’s phone received an alert from his home-security system.
Someone had entered through the garage.
The camera showed a woman in hospital scrubs carrying a black medical case.
She walked directly toward the cabinet where Kate kept the heat wrap.
Before leaving the camera’s view, she turned her face toward the lens.
It was Nurse Olivia.
