Chapter 4 - The Woman Wearing the Nurse’s FaceOlivia stared at the security footage.

“That isn’t me.”

The woman had the same brown hair, the same navy scrubs, and the same hospital identification badge.

But she carried the medical case in her right hand.

Olivia had limited movement in her right shoulder after an old injury and carried heavy objects on her left.

Hospital security verified that Olivia had not left the pediatric floor.

Detective Blake enlarged the image.

The badge looked genuine.

Someone had duplicated Olivia’s appearance well enough to fool Daniel’s home camera from several feet away.

The woman removed the heat wrap, Lily’s therapy folder, and a kitchen tablet connected to the smart-home system.

She left through the garage before police reached the property.

Her vehicle was a Brightwell transport van.

Olivia’s face changed when she saw the logo.

“My sister disappeared through Brightwell.”

Daniel looked at her.

“When?”

“Eighteen years ago.”

Olivia had been seventeen when her younger sister, Amy, accused their stepfather of abuse. A family judge ordered Amy into a short-term stabilization program run by Brightwell’s predecessor.

The facility later claimed Amy escaped.

No body was found.

Olivia spent years requesting records and received only sealed denials.

“That’s why you noticed the timestamp,” Daniel said.

“I notice every transfer involving that network.”

She had installed an independent backup on the burn-unit camera after three children were moved to private centers against medical advice.

The red light stopped blinking because the visible hospital feed was disabled.

Olivia’s external recorder continued running.

It preserved Kate’s attempt to flee, Mercer’s order for her to stop talking, and Lily’s statement about the badge.

Nora copied the file to state evidence servers.

Mercer was placed on administrative detention, but before officers could move him, the fire alarm activated.

Sprinklers remained off.

Only the corridor strobes began flashing.

Mercer shoved Officer Cole into the wall and ran through the service stairwell.

Kate disappeared from the consultation room during the same confusion.

The door had been opened with an employee access card registered to Olivia.

The impersonator had not merely copied her badge.

She had created a functioning credential.

Rachel remained behind.

She looked genuinely shocked.

“Kate said Dean would protect her.”

“Who is Kate?” Nora asked.

“Daniel’s wife.”

“That is who she pretended to be. Who is she really?”

Rachel lowered her gaze.

“Katherine Mercer.”

Daniel felt the answer like a physical blow.

Kate was Dean Mercer’s younger sister.

Her marriage license named parents who did not exist. Her college records began at age twenty-two. Everything before then had been constructed.

“She married me because of Lily?”

Rachel shook her head.

“Because of your mother.”

Daniel’s mother, Evelyn Harper, died in a house fire four years earlier. Lily had been two and was sleeping at Evelyn’s home when the fire began.

Kate entered Daniel’s life three months after the funeral.

She claimed they met by accident at a grief-support event.

Rachel revealed the meeting had been arranged by Brightwell.

“Why?”

“Your mother collected evidence against them.”

A police search of Daniel’s house uncovered a sealed cavity behind the nursery wall.

Inside were photographs of Brightwell children, judicial payments, and a flash drive bearing Evelyn’s initials.

The heat wrap was gone.

But the impersonator missed a handwritten note taped beneath the cabinet shelf.

If Lily ever says she remembers the fire, do not leave her alone with Katherine Mercer.

The note was written in Evelyn’s hand.

👉 Daniel’s mother had warned him about Kate before her death, and Lily’s burns were connected to memories of the fire that killed her grandmother.
