part 1

PART 1
“She woke up after being pushed down the stairs… then the doctor revealed the baby she lost was the only child her husband could ever have.”
Audrey Hale woke up in a private hospital room with white lights burning above her and pain splitting her body into pieces.
Her right arm was bandaged.
Her cheek was bruised.
Her ribs hurt every time she breathed.
For several seconds, she remembered nothing.
Then the staircase returned.
The marble railing.
Victoria’s hand on her shoulder.
The sharp shove.
The terrible fall.
Audrey’s hand moved to her stomach before she fully understood why.
Dr. Reed stood beside the bed holding an ultrasound image and a folder.
His face was gentle in the way doctors look when gentleness is all they have left to give.
“Audrey…”
He swallowed.
“You were eight weeks pregnant.”
The room disappeared.
Audrey stared at him.
Eight weeks.
A baby she had not known was there.
A heartbeat she had never heard.
A child lost before anyone had been allowed to love them.
Her hand trembled over her belly.
“Dominic never even came?”
Dr. Reed looked toward the phone on the bedside table.
Audrey followed his eyes.
The screen showed a paused video call.
Dominic was in a hotel suite.
Paige Mercer, his blonde mistress, was pressed against his shoulder, laughing.
Then the phone audio played.
Dominic’s voice came through cold and bored.
“She ran away.”
“I’m done with her drama.”
Audrey closed her eyes.
The pain in her body was suddenly smaller than the silence in her chest.
Dr. Reed’s jaw tightened.
He picked up another page from the file.
“There is something else.”
Audrey opened her eyes.
Dr. Reed spoke carefully.
“Dominic’s fertility tests confirm he can never father another child.”
The words landed like a second fall.
Audrey stared at the doctor.
“He knew?”
Dr. Reed did not answer fast enough.
That was answer enough.
Audrey looked at the phone again.
Dominic smiling beside Paige.
Dominic calling her drama.
Dominic abandoning the only child he would ever have.
Her tears stopped.
Not because grief was gone.
Because something colder had risen through it.
She lifted the phone with her uninjured hand.
Her voice was quiet.
Devastated.
Final.
“Enjoy the family you chose.”

On the other end, Dominic finally stopped smiling.
