PART 8

The first hearing happened four days later.

Audrey attended by video from the hospital.

Her face was still bruised.

Her arm still bandaged.

She refused makeup.

Sophia did not ask twice.

Let them see what they did, Audrey said.

Dominic appeared in court with a new attorney and old arrogance that no longer fit.

Victoria sat behind him in black, pearls at her throat, looking like the grieving mother of a son in trouble.

Paige did not sit with them.

That mattered.

Sophia presented the timeline.

The argument.

The staircase.

The 911 call.

Maria’s statement.

The hospital injuries.

The miscarriage.

Dominic’s hotel audio.

His divorce filing.

The fertility report.

Dominic’s attorney objected to the fertility record.

Sophia explained the shared fertility evaluation.

The court allowed enough.

Dominic stared at the table while Dr. Reed testified.

He confirmed the pregnancy.

The miscarriage.

The prior fertility results.

The fact that Dominic had been informed months earlier that biological conception in the future was medically impossible.

The judge looked at Dominic.

“You knew this?”

Dominic swallowed.

“Yes.”

The word seemed to cost him nothing and everything.

Audrey watched from the hospital screen.

No tears came.

She was beyond tears that day.

Sophia played the audio next.

She ran away.

I’m done with her drama.

The courtroom listened to Dominic abandon his injured wife in his own voice.

Then Maria testified.

She shook, but she did not break.

Victoria’s attorney tried to make her sound confused.

Maria lifted her chin.

“I know what a push looks like.”

The judge granted emergency protections.

Dominic was barred from contacting Audrey directly.

Victoria was barred from the hospital and Audrey’s residence.

All relevant accounts were frozen.

The house cameras and digital records were preserved.

A criminal investigation continued.

Dominic looked at the screen.

Audrey felt him searching her face for mercy.

He had always been good at finding the soft places in her.

But the fall had taken more than their child.

It had taken the last version of Audrey who could be manipulated by sadness.

The judge asked if Audrey wanted to make a statement.

She looked into the camera.

“I was told for months that I failed this family by not giving them a child.”

She paused.

“Now the truth is that I carried the only child Dominic could ever have, and his family’s cruelty helped end that life.”

The room went silent.
