PART 7

Victoria tried to leave the hospital.

That was her first mistake after the truth came out.

Sophia had already notified security.

Two officers met Victoria at the private elevator.

She lifted her chin and said she was going home.

The taller officer said, “Not yet.”

Victoria looked offended.

“I am not under arrest.”

Sophia stepped into the hallway.

“No, but you are a named subject in an active investigation.”

Victoria glared at her.

“You little ambulance chaser.”

Audrey heard it from the bed and almost laughed.

Sophia Lang had taken down corporate fraud rings, corrupt guardianship schemes, and one senator’s son.

Victoria had no idea what kind of woman she had just insulted.

Dominic stood near the doorway, frozen between anger and denial.

Paige was already on her phone with her own attorney.

Dr. Reed returned to Audrey’s side.

“You need rest.”

Audrey looked toward the hallway.

“I need to hear her say it.”

He shook his head gently.

“You may never get that.”

Audrey stared at the ceiling.

That was the cruelty of powerful families.

They did not always confess.

Sometimes they only arranged enough silence for truth to suffocate.

But this time, silence had witnesses.

Maria arrived at the hospital that evening.

She had been crying.

She hugged Audrey carefully and whispered, “I’m sorry.”

Audrey touched her arm.

“You called 911.”

Maria shook her head.

“I should have stopped her.”

“No.”

Audrey’s voice broke.

“You did the thing everyone else refused to do.”

Maria gave her statement to the detective in the waiting room.

She described Victoria’s hand.

Dominic’s delay.

Paige’s panic.

The words on the stairs.

You should have learned your place.

Audrey closed her eyes when Sophia told her that last line.

She remembered it then.

Not fully.

But enough.

The shove had not come from nowhere.

It came from years of being told she was too much.

Too common.

Too barren.

Too emotional.

Too replaceable.

Dominic returned after midnight.

He looked smaller.

No Paige.

No Victoria.

Just him.

“Audrey,” he whispered through the glass.

She had already ordered the door locked.

He placed one hand against the window.

“I lost my child too.”

Audrey looked at him from the bed.

“No.”

May you like

“You lost the child when you chose not to come.”
