The fall did not feel like falling at first.
It felt like the world had betrayed its own shape.
The ceiling moved.
The chandelier fractured into light.
The marble steps struck Audrey’s shoulder, hip, ribs, and head.
Somewhere above her, Victoria gasped.
Not with regret.
With calculation.
Audrey landed at the bottom of the staircase, unable to breathe.
Her hand twitched toward her stomach.
She did not know why.
She only knew something inside her felt wrong.
Dominic appeared at the top of the stairs.
Paige stood behind him in a black cocktail dress, one hand over her mouth.
For a moment, Audrey thought he would run down to her.
He did not.
He looked at Victoria first.
“What happened?”
Victoria’s voice shook beautifully.
“She slipped.”
Audrey tried to speak.
No sound came out.
Dominic came halfway down the stairs.
He looked at her.
Then at Paige.
Then back at his mother.
“She was leaving.”
Audrey heard it.
Even through the ringing in her ears.
Not.
Is she alive?
Not.
Call 911.
She was leaving.
Like her body on the floor was a public relations problem.
Paige whispered, “Dominic, she needs help.”
Victoria snapped, “Do not touch her.”
That was when the housekeeper, Maria, ran in from the kitchen and screamed.
Maria called the ambulance.
Not Dominic.
Not Victoria.
Maria.
Audrey passed out to the sound of sirens and Victoria saying, “She has always been unstable.”
At the hospital, Dominic gave a statement.
He said Audrey had been emotional.
He said she had stormed out after an argument.
He said she had fallen because she was careless.
He did not mention Paige.
He did not mention the bracelet.
He did not mention Victoria’s hand.
By the time Audrey woke, he had already left.
Dr. Reed told her later that Dominic signed only one form.
Not medical consent.
Not emergency contact instructions.
A request asking whether Audrey’s injuries would prevent her from appearing in court if divorce proceedings began.
Dr. Reed said he refused to answer.
Audrey listened without blinking.
Her heart had already been broken by worse news.
But that detail placed Dominic exactly where he belonged.
Not beside the bed.
