Chapter 3

Victoria Hale had not slept the night before the funeral.

She sat in her dressing room, holding a cream envelope someone had delivered through a private courier.

Inside were photographs.

Elena leaving an estate attorney’s office.

Adrian entering the same building later that afternoon.

Elena standing near a black sedan that had once transported Adrian’s campaign staff.

And one line written on plain white paper.

Ask your husband why the pregnant widow is meeting his lawyer.

Victoria’s hands had gone cold.

She had spent sixteen years protecting Adrian’s image.

Good husband.

Honorable senator.

Champion of family values.

She knew the smiles, the donors, the controlled embraces, the careful distance from women at receptions.

She also knew power attracted secrets.

When she confronted Adrian that morning, he did not deny knowing Elena.

That was his mistake.

He said only, “Victoria, this is not what you think.”

Not what you think.

A phrase guilty men had used since the beginning of time.

So Victoria followed him to the cemetery.

She watched Elena stand beside her mother’s coffin, one hand over her pregnant belly, face pale with grief.

And Victoria decided grief did not excuse betrayal.

By the time she crossed the grass, she was no longer a wife seeking an answer.

She was a woman determined to own the public story before it owned her.

The slap happened before anyone could stop her.

Then the accusation.

“You’re carrying my husband’s child!”

For one brief second, Victoria felt powerful.

Then Elena turned back with blood on her lip and no fear in her eyes.

“Tell her the truth, Adrian.”
