Chapter 5

Elena’s husband, Michael, had wanted to be a father more than anything.
He used to talk to babies in grocery store lines just to make them laugh. He kept a list of names on his phone. He once bought a tiny pair of yellow socks before Elena was even pregnant and hid them badly in his desk drawer.
When he died, Elena found the socks while looking for insurance papers.
Three weeks later, she found out she was carrying his child.
That was the one piece of joy grief had not managed to destroy.
Grace cried when Elena told her.
Then she locked herself in the bathroom and cried again.
Elena thought it was because Michael was gone.
Only now did she wonder if her mother had feared the baby would become a target for someone else’s lie.
Grace insisted the pregnancy be documented carefully.
Doctor visits.
Medical dates.
Michael’s records.
A sealed DNA collection connected to him.
Elena had resisted.
“Mom, this feels awful.”
Grace had taken her hands.
“Truth feels awful only when someone else plans to challenge it.”
Elena did not understand, but she trusted her mother.
So she followed the instructions.
Every paper went to Margaret Shaw.
Every sample was sealed.
Every chain of custody preserved.
Now, after Victoria’s slap, Elena raised the evidence bag not to create drama, but to protect Michael.
“The baby belonged to my late husband.”
Her voice did not break.
Michael was not alive to defend his child.
So Elena did.
The photographers captured the vial.
Victoria saw it.
Adrian saw it.
