Chapter 4

Adrian Hale had known Grace Cross’s name since he was nineteen.
He was never supposed to.
He heard it through a closed study door during one of the worst arguments his parents ever had.
His mother had said, “Grace Cross and that child are not our family.”
His father had replied, “Blood does not ask permission.”
Then glass shattered.
The next morning, Adrian found ashes in the fireplace and his mother told him never to repeat the name.
He obeyed.
He was young.
Ambitious.
Raised inside a family where obedience was called loyalty and questions were called betrayal.
Years passed.
His father died.
Adrian entered politics.
Grace Cross became one of many buried names in a life built on silence.
Then Margaret Shaw contacted him.
The email was brief, formal, and impossible to ignore.
It referenced Grace Cross’s estate and a matter of biological confirmation.
Adrian almost deleted it.
Instead, he agreed to meet.
Margaret brought a photograph.
Grace, young and unsmiling, holding a baby girl.
Beside her stood Adrian’s father.
Not close enough to prove anything.
Close enough to ruin sleep.
Margaret requested a DNA comparison.
Adrian refused at first.
Then she said, “You can refuse the truth, Senator. You cannot prevent it from existing.”
He gave the sample.
The results had not yet been delivered to him when Grace died.
That was why he came to the funeral.
Not for scandal.
Not for Elena’s baby.
For the answer he had spent half his life avoiding.
But Victoria had brought cameras.
And anger.
And one violent accusation.
Now Adrian stood between his wife and a pregnant woman who might be his sister, realizing silence had not protected anyone.

It had only made the truth crueler when it arrived.
