Chapter 9

Adrian wanted to explain.
That instinct surprised him.
Politicians explain to survive.
Men explain to reduce blame.
But this was different.
He wanted Elena to know he had not known enough.
Not soon enough.
Not clearly enough.
Yet even as the words gathered, he understood they would sound small beside her mother’s grave.
I heard your mother’s name once.
I obeyed silence.
I gave DNA only after an attorney cornered me with a photograph.
I came today hoping the truth would wait until after the burial.
None of it was enough.
Victoria whispered, “Adrian, say something.”
He looked at his wife.
What could he say?
That she was wrong?
Margaret had already said that.
That Elena was not carrying his child?
Elena had already proven that.
That the woman Victoria struck was his sister?
The cemetery already knew.
Adrian looked toward Grace Cross’s coffin.
A woman he might have been connected to all his life was being buried before he had ever spoken honestly about her.
His father’s secret had outlived him.
His mother’s silence had shaped him.
His ambition had taught him to avoid old truths until they became public disasters.
Now Elena stood with his family blood and none of his family protection.
Margaret closed the evidence case halfway.
“The report will be made available to authorized counsel.”
Victoria flinched at the word counsel.
Elena did not.
She simply stood still, breathing carefully, holding herself upright for her mother, her late husband, and the baby whose name would not be dragged into Adrian Hale’s scandal.
Adrian opened his mouth.
Nothing came.

Because no sentence could fix what the DNA had just revealed.
